Ohio Brewing Co. and the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition are teaming up to sponsor a free Oktoberfest this weekend in downtown Akron.
The event will be 4 to 11 p.m. Friday and 1 to 11:30 p.m. Saturday at Lock 3 Park on South Main Street.
It will feature music and food, including bratwurst, German sausage and wiener schnitzel. And, of course, beer.
Ohio Brewing, the only brewpub in the city, will unveil its new Lock 3 Lager Oktoberfest.
''It's a nice malty, traditional German-style lager,'' said Chris Verich, who heads the brewing operation at Ohio Brewing. He added that the recipe has won a silver medal at the World Beer Championships.
The event also will feature other German beers offered by the brewpub and Barktoberfest by Akron's Thirsty Dog Brewing Co.
A 20-ounce beer will cost $5 and all proceeds will go toward the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition and its efforts to develop the Towpath Trail, said Sue Reid, a spokeswoman for the Canalway Coalition.
Organizers are hoping for about 5,000 people each day.
The music lineup is:
• Fred Ziwich and the International Sound Machine, 4 to 8 p.m. Friday.
• A Hard Day's Night, Beatles tribute band, 8:30 to 11:30 p.m. Friday.
• Jeff Gill Band, 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday.
• Digressors, 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday.
• Jack Tady & the Tady Bears, 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday.
The Ohio State vs. University of Southern California football game will be shown on big-screen TVs Saturday night.
