Scripts & Scribes — Calligraphers Sheila Bly and Yvonne Howell present Art Nouveau Sparklers, a program based on the Harvest Crittenden class from last year's calligraphy conference. Each member will embellish an outlined art nouveau letter provided by the presenters, adding color and filigree, to make a completed artwork in calligraphy. Bring colored pencils, HB or harder pencil, plastic eraser, blending pencil and a black Pigma marker. The program is presented at 7 p.m. Oct. 2 at Fairlawn West Church of Christ, 2095 W. Market St., Akron, or call Anne Gingrich at 330-836-3232.
Peninsula Art Academy — Classes beginning this week at the Peninsula art school, 1600 W. Mill St., include You Too Can Paint Oct. 2 with Tallmadge artist Diane Keske and Image Transfers for Collage and Assemblage Oct. 4 with Gretchen Bierbaum. Artists' Reception — From 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 2 for Election Obsession: The Artists Network of Kent Autumn Member Show 2008 at the Downtown Gallery, 141 E. Main St., Kent. Details at 330-676-1549.

Get Spooked — A 5 to 7 p.m. artists' reception Oct. 3, for Fresh & Spooky, an exhibit of wild, weird and unearthly works at Summit Artspace through Nov. 8. Exhibit juror Mark Soppeland, artist and University of Akron professor of art, will announce the three top-prize winners at 6 p.m. The cash prizes of $500, $300 and $200 were underwritten by Omnova Solutions Foundation.
Fair Trade — Laurel Lake Retirement Community, 200 Laurel Lake Drive, Hudson, holds a noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 3, third-annual Fair Trade Boutique in the Community Room. Items include works of art, jewelry and other handmade items from developing countries. 330-655-1436.
Waters on Warhol — I know, it's in Columbus, but who can resist John Waters talking about Andy Warhol? Actually it's the Wexner Center's Lambert Family Lecture, Remembering Andy, with Waters and Vincent Freemont at 7 p.m. Oct. 3, in the Weigel Auditorium at the Wexner Center for the Arts, on the campus of Ohio State University, 1871 N. High St., Columbus. Tickets are $15, $5 members and Warhol Club cardholders, free to OSU students. 614-292-0330.

Artist On Hand — Artist Eva Kwong will be in the William Busta Gallery, 2731 Prospect Ave., Cleveland, from 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 4, to talk with visitors about her work in Eva Kwong: Noetic Moments, on view through Oct. 11. 216-298-9071.
