Lot of changes ahead for 'CSI'

By Chuck Barney
Contra Costa Times

Don't miss:

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation — Change is in the air as this highly popular drama enters its ninth season. Already, Jorja Fox and Gary Dourdan have bid farewell (although both will appear in this week's opener), and now William Petersen's Gil Grissom is set to depart after 10 episodes. He'll be replaced in the crime lab by the talented Laurence Fishburne. Can the show survive such a dramatic turnover? The clues to that intriguing mystery no doubt lie in the Nielsen numbers. 9 p.m. Thursday, CBS.

Other bets

Sunday: In the offbeat new drama, Valentine, a family of Greek gods relocates from Mount Olympus to modern-day Los Angeles. Their mission? Help people to find true love. Wish them loads of luck. They'll need it. 8 p.m., The CW.

Sunday: Laurie Metcalf returns to prime time in Easy Money, a drama series about an eccentric family of loan sharks. Just a guess, but they're probably not thriving in these tough economic times. 9 p.m., The CW.

Monday: The kooky spy drama, Chuck, is off to a great start this season, and the fun continues when John Larroquette drops by for a guest stint. He plays a debonair spy who has seen better days. Melinda Clarke (The O.C.) also guest stars. 8 p.m., NBC.

Monday: It's a night of firsts on Two and a Half Men as Charlie tries his hand at cooking, Alan attempts to date two women at the same time and Jake tries a swig of beer. Our heads just might explode pondering the possibilities. 9 p.m., CBS.

Tuesday: It's round two for Barack Obama and John McCain as the presidential candidates square off in another debate. Tom Brokaw moderates the event, which will be carried by all the major networks and news-related cable channels. 9 p.m.

Wednesday: Things are getting hot, hot, hot on Dirty Sexy Money, where the wacky Darlings find themselves dealing with the aftermath of a major fire, a death in the family and a surprising arrest connected to the demise of Dutch. Oh, we're so there. 10 p.m., ABC.

Thursday: Molly Shannon and Selma Blair star in Kath & Kim, a zany sitcom based on an Australian hit. Kath is a frisky 40-something divorcee. Kim is her bratty daughter who moves back in with her after a failed marriage. Lots of dysfunction ensues. 8:30 p.m., NBC.

Thursday: The new crime drama Eleventh Hour focuses on a brainy biophysicist (Rufus Sewell) who investigates crimes of a scientific nature for the government. The opener has him going after someone who may be cloning humans. 10 p.m., CBS.

Thursday: Based on a British hit, Life on Mars tells the story of a New York cop (Jason O'Mara) who is hit by a car and inexplicably wakes up in 1973. Don't you just hate it when that happens? Harvey Keitel and Michael Imperioli also star. 10:01 p.m., ABC.

Friday: The Starter Wife generated solid ratings as a miniseries last year. Now it returns as a full-fledged weekly drama featuring Debra Messing (Will & Grace) as a woman trying to find her footing after her movie executive husband ditches her. Judy Davis and Chris Diamantopoulos also star. 9 p.m., USA.

Saturday: Tori Spelling opted out of the Beverly Hills 90210 remake, but she's not above hosting the Macy's Passport Celebrity Catwalk Challenge. It's a special that has various stars, including Jerry Springer and Nancy O'Dell, trying to rock the runway. 8 p.m., NBC.
