Andy Warhol: Other Voices, Other Rooms

By Betty O'Neil-Roderick
Ohio.com

Andy Warhol: Other Voices, Other Rooms opened to rave reviews at the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, Ohio, on September 13, 2008. Whether or not you appreciate Warhol's work this show is a must see, because he chronicled the 60's as no one else could, and the archival material is extraordinary.

The exhibit's dazzling multimedia environments immerse the viewer in Warhol's world, and offer a fresh look at the persona and practice of the celebrated Pop Art master.

Because Warhol kept everything - boxes and boxes of memorabilia are stored at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, PA.

More than any other artist, Andy Warhol merged public life with private lives, the glamorous with the mundane, celebrity with anonymity and voyeurism with seeming indifference. His famous quote about everyone being entitled to their "15 minutes of fame" has become the byword of pop culture, maybe even predicting the advent of shows such as American Idol.

The exhibit showcases more than 700 of his works, along with items dating from 1949 to 1987, including paintings, drawings, prints, films, TV programs, wallpaper and audio recordings. Giving equal weight to all of the media Warhol used, the exhibition sheds new light on the cinematic sensibility that pervades his work.

The exhibit was organized by the Stedelijk Museum of Amsterdam and the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, in collaboration with the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh; and curated by Eva Meyer-Hermann, an independent curator from Cologne, Germany. This is the only United States installation of this show, and will be at the Wexner only until February 15, 2009.

The Wexner Center for the Arts is located at 1871 N. High Street on The Ohio State University campus in Columbus, Ohio, and is open Tuesday through Sunday. Free Walk-in Tours take place Thursdays at 5 p.m. and Saturdays at 1 p.m. For more information call 614-292-3535 or visit www.wexarts.org.
