'Frontline' scrutinizes Obama and McCain

The Choice 2008 — The acclaimed public-television documentary series Frontline opens its 27th season with a rigorous examination of the presidential election and the two unlikely candidates vying for the White House. The program draws on in-depth interviews with the advisers, friends and those closest to Barack Obama and John McCain, as well as seasoned observers of American politics. Collectively, they delve behind the headlines to tell a deeper story of these men and their remarkable ascent to power. 9 p.m. Tuesday, PBS.

Other bets

Tonight: The claws come out on Desperate Housewives as Gaby and Susan wind up in a catfight following a run-in between their kids. Meanwhile, Danielle Van De Kamp (Joy Lauren) returns to Wisteria Lane and stirs up ill feelings. 9 p.m., ABC.

Tonight: Who would your kids vote for? Linda Ellerbee returns with another Nick News Special Edition in which she poses questions taken from children across the country to presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain. Kids are also urged to choose their fave. 9 p.m., Nickelodeon.

Monday: It's with warm regards that we welcome back Christina Applegate, who recently underwent treatment for breast cancer. She returns in the season two opener of Samantha Who?, which has our lovable Sam teaming with her mom in a dance contest. 9:31 p.m., ABC.

Monday: Section 60: Arlington National Cemetery is an absorbing documentary that visits the area of the famed military burial ground reserved for those who died in Iraq and Afghanistan and delves into the poignant stories of the fallen. 9 p.m., HBO.

Monday: Christian Slater takes on his first television series in the spy drama My Own Worst Enemy. He plays a mild-mannered suburbanite, who, thanks to a malfunctioning implant in his brain, discovers he has an alter ego as a covert operative trained to kill. 10 p.m., NBC.

Tuesday: Viewers apparently are on the same wavelength as The Mentalist, which has become the first bona-fide new hit of the season. Tonight, Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) investigates the death of a young woman whose body washed up on a beach. 9 p.m., CBS.

Wednesday: It's round three for Obama and McCain as the presidential hopefuls engage in their final debate. Moderated by CBS newsman Bob Schieffer, the 90-minute showdown will air on all the major networks and cable news outlets. 9 p.m.

Thursday: On The Office, Jan is about to have her baby, so Michael practices various possible birthing situations with Dwight. Oh, you just know that can't be a good thing. 9 p.m., NBC.

Friday: Loosely based on Daniel Defoe's classic novel, the new drama series Crusoe strands our hero (Philip Winchester) on an island where he encounters a number of hardships. Sure, but will he have to deal with anything as creepy as the Others? 8 p.m., NBC.

Friday: Inspired by the 2005 Oscar-winner, Crash is a new drama series intent on examining themes of race, class and gender. The solid cast includes Dennis Hopper, D.B. Sweeney and Luis Chavez. 10 p.m., Starz.

Saturday: Harry Connick Jr. stars in Living Proof. It's a true-life TV movie about a research doctor's struggles to get a revolutionary breast-cancer drug approved for public use. Among the cast are Amanda Bynes, Tammy Blanchard, Jennifer Coolidge, Angie Harmon and Regina King. 9 p.m., Lifetime.
