24: Redemption Our long national nightmare is over. After an agonizingly excessive layoff, Jack Bauer finally returns to prime time in this turbo-charged movie that sets the stage for January's Season 7. This time our sleep-deprived action hero is pitted against a vicious African warlord who is coercing children to join his militia. Lots of things are blown up along the way. 8 p.m., Fox. See Beacon Journal writer Rich Heldenfels' review in today's Channels television guide.
Other bets
Tonight: As far as we know, Jimmy Kimmel can't carry a tune, but he's our host for the 2008 American Music Awards. Scheduled performers include Christina Aguilera, Beyonce, Mariah Carey, Coldplay, Miley Cyrus, the Fray, the Jonas Brothers, Alicia Keys, Leona Lewis, New Kids on the Block, Pink, Rihanna, Taylor Swift and Kanye West. 8 p.m., ABC.
Tonight: Expect some laughs and playful irreverence with A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All! The special has one of our favorite funnymen, Stephen Colbert, welcoming musical guests Feist, Toby Keith, John Legend, Willie Nelson and Elvis Costello, along with longtime colleague Jon Stewart. 10 p.m., Comedy Central.
Monday: Can the wayward Heroes get its mojo back or is it a lost cause? In tonight's episode, Nathan learns the truth about his father, Sylar confronts Elle, and Suresh experiments with his new formula. 9 p.m., NBC.
Tuesday: Popcorn, ice cream and toast for Thanksgiving? That's what happens when you leave Snoopy in charge of the menu for A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. Too bad it has Peppermint Patty throwing a fit. 8 p.m., ABC.
Tuesday: It's time to say good-bye to rogue cop Vic Mackey (Michael Chiklis) as the groundbreaking crime series, The Shield, calls it quits. The only question that now remains: Will Vic get his comeuppance? 10 p.m., FX.
Tuesday: The seventh season of Dancing With the Stars gave us a rash of unfortunate injuries and the hideous debacle that was Cloris Leachman. Tonight, it finally gives us a winner. So dust off that ugly disco-ball trophy and get ready for some fancy footwork. 9 p.m., ABC.
Tuesday: Tensions mount and accusations fly as the Southern belles of The Real Housewives of Atlanta convene for a reunion special. We'll find out if friendships can be mended and what really went down in the much talked-about catfight between Lisa and Kim. 11 p.m., Bravo.
Wednesday: It's shades of Ed Sullivan and Carol Burnett as Rosie O'Donnell attempts to revive some variety-show magic. In Rosie Live, she presides over an hour of production numbers, comedy sketches and audience giveaways. Ne-Yo, Alanis Morissette, Kathy Griffin and Jane Krakowski are among her guests. 8 p.m., NBC.
Thursday: Break out those gigantic goofy balloons. The Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade rolls through Manhattan for the 82nd time. Meredith Vieira, Matt Lauer and Al Roker anchor coverage of the event, which features appearance by, among others, Miley Cyrus, David Archuleta, James Taylor, Andy Williams and some jolly bearded guy in a red suit. 9 a.m., NBC.
Thursday: It wouldn't be Thanksgiving without some pro football on the menu, although these matchups could be a couple of turkeys. The early game pits the Detroit Lions against the Tennessee Titans (12:30 p.m., CBS) and later it's the Dallas Cowboys against the Seattle Seahawks (4:30 p.m., CBS).
Friday: Be sure to get to the station in time for The Polar Express. It's the enchanting animated holiday saga about a mysterious train conductor (voiced by Tom Hanks) who whisks a skeptical youngster off on a wild ride to the North Pole. 8 p.m., ABC.
Saturday: On Ellen's Even Bigger Really Big Show, Ellen DeGeneres welcomes a variety of acts from all over the globe, including an illusionist, celebrity impressionists, dancers, comedians and musical acts. Taped at the annual Comedy festival in Las Vegas. 9 p.m., TBS.
