Expert writes 'Ohio's Grand Canal'

Though the Ohio and Erie Canal was in operation for about 70 years and flourished for about 30, the system remains of interest for local residents and historians. Terry K. Woods, past president of the Canal Society of Ohio and the American Canal Society, is just the person to write Ohio's Grand Canal: A Brief History of the Ohio & Erie Canal.

Describing the planning and construction of the canals, their operation and, most interesting, the catastrophic 1913 flood that put an end to the canal system, the book also contains many great photos. Ohio's Grand Canal (117 pages, softcover) costs $11.95 from Kent State University Press, http://upress.kent.edu.

Sextuplets' mother returns with essays

Jennifer Hanselman, Cuyahoga Falls mother of seven and an occasional contributor to the Beacon Journal, has a second collection of essays about life with her sextuplets, now almost 5 years old, plus their older brother, who's pushing 7. Return of the Party of Nine: Life with Sextuplets + One includes updates on preschool, family vacation, one child's autism diagnosis and many, many potty references.

Return of the Party of Nine (120 pages, softcover) costs $16.95 from http://www.saddlepointpublishing.com. Hanselman will sign her book at 7 p.m. Thursday at Joseph-Beth Booksellers at Legacy Village in Lyndhurst.

A guiding light for photographers

According to Westfield Center author Richard F. Edington, ''Since cameras were invented, lighthouses have been a popular subject of photographers.'' He provides many tips and suggestions in The Photographers' Guide to Great Lakes Lighthouses, in which he selects 25 lighthouses of the 225 or so on Lakes Michigan, Huron and Erie, discussing composition and best time of day for the best shot.

Edington's own beautiful photos show different vantage points and the lighthouses in summer and winter. Included with the directions are Global Positioning System coordinates.

The 94-page softcover costs $24.95 from http://www.atlasbooks.com. Edington will sign his book from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Borders, 4927 Grand Shops Ave., Medina.
