TV ad's music has history

By Rich Heldenfels
Beacon Journal popular culture writer

If it's Thursday, this must be the mailbag. . . .

Q: There is a commercial on for Tresor with Kate Winslet. The background music is beautiful. Is it possible it is by my favorite composer, John Barry, who has also written for some James Bond movies?

A: Not according to the folks at Lancome, the company behind Tresor. The music was composed for Lancome commercials in 1989 by Philippe Briche, and has been used since then, although the arrangements of the music have been changed from time to time. Unfortunately, according to Lancome, it has not been released as a recording.

Q: What can you tell me about Emily Procter, who plays Calleigh Duquesne on ''CSI: Miami?''

A: Born in North Carolina, Procter worked as a weather anchor for a Greenville TV station while studying at East Carolina University. After heading out to Hollywood, she had roles in Leaving Las Vegas and Jerry Maguire, but before CSI: Miami, I think she was best known as Ainsley Hayes on The West Wing. Her hobbies include playing poker and interior decorating.

Q: There was a series called ''Wildfire'' on ABC Family. The first two seasons have been released on DVD. When will the third and fourth seasons be released?

A: The third season will be on DVD on March 3. I have not seen a release date for the fourth season. But seasons two through four are available for viewing online at ABCFamily.com.

Q: I was watching the movie ''L.A. Story'' with Steve Martin and Victoria Tennant. I know what Steve Martin is doing, but what has Victoria Tennant been up to?

A: When the charming L.A. Story was made in 1991, Martin and Tennant had been husband and wife for about five years — his first marriage, her third. They split three years later. Since then, according to various entertainment references, Tennant has tried her hand at writing and producing, remarried (to Kirk Justin Stambler, an entertainment lawyer) and had two children, as well as making occasional guest-star appearances in TV shows, including Scrubs, Monk and The Beast.

Q: Will ''K-Ville'' be coming back?

A: No. The series ended its single season in 2008. Anthony Anderson, who co-starred, has moved on to Law & Order.

Q: Who played Bill Barnett's wife in earlier episodes of ''24?''

A: I think you mean Bill Buchanan, the former CTU boss played by James Morrison, who has been part of the current season's schemes. Bill's wife, Karen Hayes, was played by Jayne Atkinson.

Q: The movie ''The Last Castle'' with Robert Redford has been on TV occasionally. A few months ago I was viewing it and was unable to see the last hour. When will it be on again?

A: I do not know of an airing in the next couple of weeks. But the movie has been released on DVD, so you may want to see if your local video store or library has it in stock.

Q: There was a movie filmed in my home town of Lancaster, Ohio, by the name of ''Green Grass of Wyoming.'' It starred Lloyd Nolan, Peggy Cummings and Charles Coburn. I have never seen this available. Can you help me find a copy?

A: The 1948 movie was the third in a series of films based on books by Mary O'Hara, also including My Friend Flicka and Thunderhead, Son of Flicka. Fox Home Entertainment has released a box set of all three films on DVD as the Flicka Family Classics Collection.

Q: Years ago I watched a movie called ''Sudie and Simpson'' starring Louis Gossett Jr. and a young Sarah Gilbert. Is it available anywhere?

A: The 1990 TV-movie has been released on DVD. If your local retailer cannot get it, I have seen it for sale online at Amazon.com. By the way, Sarah Gilbert is all of 34 years old, so I like to think that she is still young.
