William V. Muse served as president of the University of Akron from 1984 to 1992; from there he became president of Auburn University in Alabama; then East Carolina University. But before that? He was the seventh son of ''Brother Mose,'' a Pentecostal preacher in rural Mississippi, and his wife, ''Sister Muse.''
Muse's memoir, The Seventh Muse, tells of his upbringing and lifetime in education, with many anecdotes (at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, La., his nickname was ''Suitcase'' for reasons that cannot be printed here); stories of his fondness for sports, including his time at a fantasy baseball camp where he tore a rotator cuff; his favorite country music singers, like Hank Williams and Johnny Cash; his travels; and his personal heroes, including Ronald Reagan and Elvis Presley.
Muse writes with affection of his time in Akron, and reports on the university's athletic upgrade from the Ohio Valley Conference to the Mid-America Conference, the development of the polymer science discipline and the closing of Buchtel Avenue to form a pedestrian campus.
The Seventh Muse (361 pages, softcover) costs $24.95 from http://www.iuniverse.com.
