America's Got Talent Susan Boyle and her fellow British standouts have thrown down the gauntlet, and now it's time for America to respond. Does the United States have the acts to match them? We'll find out this week, when singers, dancers and various other performers begin parading into our living rooms while dreaming a dream of show-biz superstardom. But, as usual, we'll also be watching for the freaks and weirdos. New host Nick Cannon joins returning judges David Hasselhoff, Sharon Osbourne and Piers Morgan. 9 p.m. Wednesday, NBC.
Other bets
Tonight: Banish that image of an old bearded wizard from your head. Merlin reimagines the medieval adventure and pegs it to a hot young hunk (Colin Morgan) with magical powers. 8 p.m., NBC.
Tonight: And you thought the economy was our biggest problem. Impact is a two-part disaster flick in which the moon comes hurtling toward Earth. David James Elliott, Natasha Henstridge and James Cromwell star. 9 p.m., ABC. See Akron Beacon Journal writer Rich Heldenfels' review in today's Channels television guide.
Monday: Something tells us that Make It or Break It, a new drama about the cutthroat world of high-stakes gymnastics will be teeming with competitive little drama queens. But will it earn a ''10'' in the ratings? 9 p.m., ABC Family.
Tuesday: On The Superstars, celebrities live out their sports fantasies when they pair up with professional athletes and compete against other duos in grueling physical challenges. But the Olympics it isn't. 8 p.m., ABC.
Tuesday: Remember when Whoopi Goldberg could and did actually act? She gives it another go in a recurring guest stint on the second season of The Cleaner. Goldberg plays Benjamin Bratt's ex-sponsor. 10 p.m., A&E.
Tuesday: If you're going through Gossip Girl withdrawal, check out NYC Prep. It's a reality series tied to a group of pampered, fat-free prep schoolers in New York. But can they match Chuck and Serena for pure naughtiness? 10 p.m., Bravo.
Wednesday: In the new drama, The Philanthropist, James Purefoy stars as a billionaire bad boy who becomes determined to distribute riches to the needy. Just call him a one-man stimulus package. 10 p.m., NBC.
Wednesday: For its 22nd season, The Real World heads south of the border to a resort in Cancun, Mexico. Just a wild guess, but we don't expect to see much in the way of clothing. 10 p.m., MTV.
Thursday: The sweet 16? It won't be for long as two more contestants get dumped on So You Think You Can Dance. Our prediction: Someone will cry. 9 p.m., Fox.
Friday: Virtuality is a sci-fi adventure flick about a starship that goes on a 10-year exploratory journey in space. But then some very bad things happen and people get stressed out. 8 p.m., Fox.
Saturday: With a title like Ellen's Bigger, Longer and Wider Show the latest variety special from Ellen DeGeneres better be, well, special. Among the acts: rap star Kanye West, magician David Blaine and comedian Nick Cannon. 9 p.m., TBS.
