'30 Rock' returns for fourth season

By Chuck Barney
Contra Costa Times

Don't miss:

30 Rock — After pulling off a rare Emmy ''three-peat,'' Tina Fey's hilariously twisted sitcom returns for its fourth season. The opener has Jack (Alec Baldwin) ordering Liz (Fey), Tracy (Tracy Morgan) and Jenna (Jane Krakowski) to make adjustments to their sketch comedy show so it becomes more ''relatable.'' (Sounds like something Fey might have heard a few times regarding the highly acclaimed, but lowly rated 30 Rock). Meanwhile, Kenneth (Jack McBrayer) leads a bold pages strike. Steve Buscemi guest stars. 9:30 p.m. Thursday, NBC. Read Akron Beacon Journal writer Rich Heldenfels' review of the show in today's Channels television guide.

Other bets

Tonight: We have a Paula Abdul sighting. The American Idol alum shows up in the first season finale of Drop Dead Diva, in which she plays a judge — of the robe-wearing variety. 9 p.m., Lifetime.

Tonight: Uh-oh. On Desperate Housewives, a chance encounter reunites Gaby with John Rowland (Jess Metcalfe). You know: the lawn boy she used to get busy with. 9 p.m., ABC.

Tonight: On Cold Case, the 2004 murder of a teen at a juvenile detention center is investigated. The boy was wrongly sent to the facility and was killed before Valens (Danny Pino) could get him released. 10 p.m., CBS.

Monday: Seems like Penny and Leonard just can't find any quality time together on The Big Bang Theory. Now Howard is hanging around, acting as a third wheel. 9:30 p.m., CBS.

Tuesday: Get ready for an invasion of flesh-eating ghouls. Starz Inside: Zombiemania traces the evolution of the zombie from its roots in African folklore and Haitian Voodoo to its current status as a pop-culture icon. 10 p.m., Starz.

Wednesday: On The Middle, Frankie and Mike see their plans for a romantic anniversary derailed by, among other things, two crazy aunts and an incontinent dog. 8:30 p.m., ABC.

Wednesday: Oh, that devious Sue (Jane Lynch) is again up to no good on Glee. Tonight, she makes the singers compete against one another in hopes of creating a rift among them. 9 p.m., Fox.

Thursday: There's trouble brewing on Grey's Anatomy, in which the merger has residents fearing for their jobs, and Callie is ticked off because her father (Hector Elizondo) has recruited a priest to urge her to date men. 9 p.m., ABC.

Thursday: In the second season of Keeping Score, conductor Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony continue to try to make classical music accessible to the masses. The opener heads to France to seek out the inspirations for composer Hector Berlioz. 10 p.m., PBS.

Friday: TV serves up more on-the-job hazards in Lobstermen. The series follows rugged crews who brave the icy waters of the Atlantic to put a juicy shellfish on your dinner plate. 8 p.m., Discovery Channel.

Saturday: In Sorority Wars, Lucy Hale plays a college freshman who has been groomed to continue her mother's (Courtney Thorne-Smith) legacy by joining the Delta house. But a battle erupts when she decides to pledge its rival, the Kappas. 9 p.m., Lifetime.
