Fun on the train

By Betty O'Neill-Roderick
Ohio.com

Travel by train is enjoying a comeback all across the United States. Trains traverse the state of Ohio, offering excursions through historic and scenic areas - as well as exciting adventure when the train gets robbed.

The Hocking Valley Scenic Railway departs from Nelsonville, Ohio, offering a leisurely ride back in time through the rolling hills of Southeast Ohio. Visitors will see an 1840's pioneer log village along the way. Train rides take place every Saturday and Sunday through November.

Most of the train excursions are peaceful, but on Saturday, June 13, and again on September 19, word is that the train will be robbed by bandits on horseback. Don't be alarmed, it's all in fun and play money will be handed out to everyone as they board the train to appease the bandits. But it's a thrilling trip for the family, and the kids will love being in on the excitement!

The train has traveled through the Hocking Valley for over 100 years, but 35 years ago when the economy was in a downturn, a group of businessmen decided not to allow the railroad to die. Instead they purchased part of the track and started the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway. In these tough economic times the railway continues to flourish, with over 34,000 passengers riding the train in 2008.

Each train ride offers a bit of history, as riders pass by an old canal lock, and cross and re-cross the Hocking River. Regular train trips stop for 30 minutes at Robbins Crossing, an 1840s pioneer log village.

All trains are seated on a first come, first served basis, and the "robbery" train is always a sellout so reservations are recommended. To reserve your place on any of the trains or at the Great Train Robbery, call 800-967-7834 or visit www.hockingvalleytrain.com.
