This spring head south to Adams County and visit Southern Ohio's Wheat Ridge Amish community. Here nestled in the foothills of Appalachia, Harry and Lydia Miller have established Miller's Furniture & Bakery to cater to the needs of the traveling public.
The Millers settled here in 1977 in the family's farmhouse, along with their six children, and then they started baking. Soon word spread of their delicious baked goods and people began to stop by for bread, pies, and cinnamon rolls, no doubt enticed by the aroma of an oven-fresh apple pie wafting across the fields.
Meanwhile Harry Miller recognized the need for Amish-style furniture, and began hand-crafting indoor and outdoor furniture. As word spread of the quality of his work, the demand for his furniture eclipsed farming, and today the Millers operate a store with 34,000 square feet of lovely furniture, all hand-crafted.
Miller is creative and takes pride in giving brown maple wood the look of expensive cherry furniture, allowing customers to save a pretty penny. If you can't find what you want in the store, they'll make it for you, it's the Amish way of doing business.
The Miller family business is now in its third generation, with son, Daniel running the furniture store, Larry at the Bakery and Harry Jr. at the Bulk Food Store. The Miller's 20 grandkids assure that the family business and legacy will continue to serve their loyal customers for years to come.
Today, the 300 acre farm uses solar energy and air compressors, their cash registers are powered by wind-generated energy, yet in the parking lot you may see a horse and buggy standing next to a BMW.
For a day in the country, Millers offers a crossroads in time. Miller's Furniture & Bakery is located off the beaten path on Wheat Ridge Road in West Union, Ohio, for more information call 937-544-8524.
