Ohio's outdoor dramas open

Trumpet in the Land, opened for its 40th season on June 12, 2009 at the Schoenbrunn Amphitheatre just outside New Philadelphia, Ohio. Author Paul Green wrote the historic tale of the founding of Ohio's first settlement - Schoenbrunn in 1772.

Trumpet is an engaging tale that takes place during the Revolutionary War. The story's main characters are: David Zeisberger, a Moravian missionary; Simon Girty, a conniving border renegade, and Captain Pipe, a young warrior chief with a hatred of white men that stems from his father's murder.

The story plays out on a large outdoor stage with horses, Native Americans, British and American soldiers. Gun battles and flames are all part of the spectacle for the cast of 47 actors, many of them college students, who join seasoned professional actors for 44 performances of Trumpet this summer.

Simon Girty's story now merits its own production, The White Savage will play in repertory for 15 performances this summer.

For a change of pace there will be five performances of everyone's favorite musical, The Music Man. All performances begin at 8:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $15 for ages 13 and older; $13 for seniors and $7 for kids 12 and younger.

Backstage tours are available before the performance. For tickets call 330-339-1132 or visit www.trumpetintheland.com.

Tecumseh was a legendary Shawnee leader who tried to unite all of the Indian tribes in an effort to drive the white man from their sacred homeland during the late 1700's. His story plays out on the huge outdoor stage at the Sugarloaf Mountain Amphitheatre where the audience has a unique view of the drama as they are surrounded by the spectacle of galloping horses, live military cannons in action and dazzling battle sequences.

An all-you-can-eat buffet is available before the performance along with backstage tours. After the performance guests are invited to meet the cast and talk to the actors one-on-one. To reserve your place for all of these events call 866-775-0700 or visit www.tecumsehdrama.com.

NOTE:

XENIA: An Ohio outdoor historical drama about a Shawnee Indian chief is ending a 26-year run after its parent company's bankruptcy filing.

Ticket sales for ''Blue Jacket'' have dwindled. The show staged in Xenia in Southwest Ohio wasn't produced in 2008 while the company tried to come up with a new script and money to pay debts.

Last month, the nonprofit First Frontier Inc. filed for bankruptcy protection. Board president Jim Harworth says the company owes at least $440,000.

Blue Jacket was a war chief who led the Shawnees in the 1790s against Army forces trying to crush Indian resistance in what is now Ohio.

First Frontier estimates only about 12,000 tickets were sold in 2007 compared with as many as 50,000 tickets in previous years.
