The Fall Hiking Extravaganza at the Wilderness Center is going year-round.
You can earn a carved hiking staff (for first- timers) or a pin (for veterans) for hiking the six trails at the center near Wilmot in Sugar Creek Township on the Stark-Wayne county line.
Previously, the program ran from Sept. 1 through Nov. 30.
The fee is $14 if you want a hiking staff or $7 if you just want a pin.

Today
Contra dance — Everyone is invited to a contra dance with music by Strings and Things and caller Carol Kopp. The dance will be 8 to 10:30 p.m. at the Boston Township School House at state Route 303 and Riverview Road in Peninsula. Instruction will be provided at 7 p.m. Admission is $6. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing.
Junior Rangers — The National Park Service is presenting a Junior Rangers snowshoeing program for children 7 to 12 years old in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. It will run 10 to 11:30 a.m. There must be at least 2 inches of snow. Participants will snowshoe along the Cross Country Trail. The fee is $8 per child. Dress for the weather. Ellet lights — The Akron Metropolitan Parks Hiking Club will meet at 7 p.m. for a sidewalk hike of three to four miles to look at Christmas lights in Ellet. Meet at the north end of the Eastgate Plaza parking lot off Canton Road. Call 330-733-3995 for more information.
Winter fun — The Medina County Park District is staging Wintertime at Wolf Creek for children 6 to 10 years old. It runs from 10 a.m. to noon or 1 to 3 p.m. It continues at those times on Friday. The program includes crafts, scavenger hunts and snacks. Dress for the weather. The Wolf Creek Environmental Center is at 6100 Ridge Road (state Route 94), Sharon Township. Free. Tracking kits — The Stark County Park District is presenting a program on wildlife tracks at 6 p.m. at the Exploration Gateway, 5712 12th St. N.W., Perry Township. Call 330-477-3552 for reservations or more information.
Saturday
Ski workshop — The National Park Service will present a cross-country ski workshop for beginners from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Meet at the Kendall Lake Shelter off Truxell Road in Boston Township. Dress for the weather. It will be held with or without snow. Bring equipment, if you have it. Rental equipment will be available. The fee is $10 with no equipment rental and $15 with rental. Call 216-524-1497 for reservations and additional information.
Holiday burner — The National Park Service is staging a tough eight-mile hike on the Buckeye and Valley trails in the Cuyahoga Valley. It will run from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Meet at the park headquarters at Riverview and Vaughn roads in Brecksville. Come with sturdy shoes, cold-weather gear and water.
Winter hike — Metro Parks, Serving Summit County is sponsoring a 1.2-mile wildlife hike at 2 p.m. in Furnace Run Metro Park. Meet naturalist Meghan Doran at the Brushwood Area off Townsend Road in Richfield Township. Learn to see wildlife signs. Call 330-865-8065 for more information.

Tracking hike — The Stark County Park District is presenting a naturalist-led wildlife tracking hike from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Exploration Gateway, 5712 12th St. N.W., Perry Township. Call 330-477-3552 for reservations or more information.
Fly-fishing get-together — The Stark County Park District is hosting a fly-fishing get-together from noon to 3 p.m. The keynote speaker is Mike Murgida of the USA World Youth Fly Fishing Team. The program will be held at the Sippo Lake Park Clubhouse, 5300 Tyner St. N.W., Perry Township. Participants will tie flies after the talk. A $1 donation is requested for supplies. Portage hike — The Portage Trail Walkers hiking club will meet at 9 a.m. for a 5.7-mile hike at Mogadore Reservoir. Meet at the Ankor Inn off state Route 43 in Suffield Township. Call 330-673-6896 for more information.

Brandywine Gorge — The National Park Service is staging a moderately tough 11/2-mile winter hike to Brandywine Falls and along Brandywine Creek. It will run from 2 to 4 p.m. Meet at Brandywine Falls off Brandywine Road in Sagamore Hills Township. Dress for the weather.

Nature walk — Mount Union College's John T. Huston-Dr. John B. Brumbaugh Nature Center will host a nature walk at 2 p.m. The center is on Daniel Street off state Route 183 six miles south of Alliance in Washington Township. Call 330-823-7487 for more information.

Ski preparation — Ranger Paul Motts of the National Park Service will conduct a workshop on cross-country ski preparation from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Meet at the Kendall Lake Shelter off Truxell Road in Boston Township. The fee is $10. To register, call 216-524-1497.
Wednesday
Tallmadge hike — The Akron Metropolitan Parks Hiking Club will meet at 9:30 a.m. for a five-mile hike in Tallmadge. Meet at Memorial Park on Southwest Avenue about a quarter mile from Tallmadge Circle. A three-mile hike is also an option. Call 330-733-3995 for more information.
Wilderness walk — The Wilderness Center off U.S. 250 near Wilmot will hold two hikes covering 2.5 miles at 10 a.m. Call 330-359-5235 for more information.
