45th annual event offers range of available trails

There's something new in Summit County's popular Fall Hiking Spree: a hiker's choice.
Participants in the 45th annual event, which begins today, can hike eight of the 14 designated trails or hike seven of them plus another trail not on the designated list.
''We wanted to do something different this year,'' said Nate Eppink, spokesman for Metro Parks, Serving Summit County, which sponsors the event.
For example, to save on high gasoline prices, Eppink said, a participant could go to Gorge Metro Park and hike both trails there, not just the designated one.
Since the program began, 322,390 participants have earned hiking staffs or shields for completing the spree, Eppink said. Last year's total was 11,720.
This year's designated trails and parks are:
• Highbridge, Cascade Valley, Akron, 3.2 miles, moderate.
• Quarry, Deep Lock Quarry, Peninsula, 1.2 miles, moderate.
• Willow, Firestone, Akron, 1.6 miles, easy.
• Old Mill, Furnace Run, Richfield Township, one mile, easy.
• Alder, Goodyear Heights, Akron, 1.4 miles, easy.
• Gorge, Gorge, Cuyahoga Falls, 1.8 miles, difficult.
• Adam Run, Hampton Hills, Akron, 3.2 miles, difficult.
• Sugarbush, Liberty Park, Twinsburg, 0.6 mile, easy.
• Indian Spring, Munroe Falls, Munroe Falls, 2.2 miles, moderate.
• Cherry Lane/Fernwood, Nature Realm, Akron, one mile, easy.
• Deer Run, O'Neil Woods, Bath Township, 1.8 miles, difficult.
• Dogwood, Sand Run, Akron, 1.8 miles, difficult.
• Pheasant Run, Silver Creek, Norton, 1.2 miles, easy.
• Towpath, from Vanderhoof Road north to Eastern Road, New Franklin, two miles, easy.
The deadline to complete the spree is Nov. 30.
Forms are available at the park district's Nature Realm, 1828 Smith Road, Akron, and park district offices, 975 Treaty Line Road, Akron. They are also available at all Acme Fresh Markets in Summit County and online.
First-time hikers earn a hiking staff; veteran hikers get a shield to attach to the staff. The rewards are free for Summit County residents. The fee for others is $10 for first-time hikers and $5 for veteran hikers.

Great fun the wife and I did it last year 1 month after I had back surgery(great therapy) looking forward to trying again thanks Metro
