Today
Botzum hike — The Akron Metro Parks Hiking Club will meet at 7 p.m. for a five-mile hike on the Towpath Trail. Meet at the Botzum Trailhead off Riverview Road near West Bath Road in North Akron. Call 330-733-3995 for information.
Contra dance — Everyone is invited to join in a contra dance with music by Strings and Things and caller Carol Kopp. The dance will be from 8 to 10:30 p.m. at the Boston Township School House at state Route 303 and Riverview Road in Peninsula. Instruction will be provided at 7 p.m. Admission is $6. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes.
Gateway tour — The Stark County Park District is presenting a tour at 6 p.m. at the Exploration Gateway, 5712 12th St. N.W., Perry Township. Call 330-477-3552 for reservations and information.

Firestone Friday — Metro Parks, Serving Summit County, is sponsoring a family program at 7 p.m. at Firestone Metro Park. Meet at the Tuscarawas Meadows area off Harrington Road in South Akron. Call 330-865-8065 for information.
Wine-tasting train — The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad is offering a wine-tasting tour from 7 to 9 p.m. from the Rockside Station in Independence. For 21 years old and older. Tickets are $45 a person. Advance reservations required. Call 800-468-4070 for reservations and information.
Rush-hour hike — The National Park Service will hold a rush-hour hike on the Towpath Trail at 5:30 p.m. Meet at Lock 39 Trailhead off Canal Road at Rockside Road in Valley View.
Night bike ride — Century Cycle in Peninsula is organizing a night bike ride along the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail in the Cuyahoga Valley. Bicyclists will pedal 15 to 20 miles. The ride will start at 8 p.m. Helmets and bike lights are required. Meet at the bike shop on state Route 303 next to the Cuyahoga River. Call 800-201-7433 for information.
Saturday
Fall Family Outing — Metro Parks, Serving Summit County, is presenting its Fall Family Outing from 6 to 9 p.m. at Silver Creek Metro Park. There will be hay rides, bonfires, naturalist-led activities, apple cider and cookies, live music and more. The park is at 5000 Hametown Road in Norton. Call 330-865-8065 for information.
Park concert — The April Verch Band will perform at 8 p.m. in the Happy Days Lodge in the Cuyahoga Valley National park. That's off state Route 303 in Boston Heights. The Canadian singer-fiddler is known for her step dancing. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children 3 to 12. Call 330-657-2909 for reservations and information.
Extended hike — Volunteer Pat Patterson will direct an extended hike of five miles on the Piney Woods, Parcours and Alder trails in Goodyear Heights Metro Park. It will start at 10 a.m. Meet in the Pioneer Area, 550 Frazier Ave., in East Akron. Call 330-865-8065 for information.
Bird walk — Volunteer Dwight Chasar will direct a bird walk looking at floodplain and lowland forest birds from 8 to 10:30 a.m. in the Cuyahoga Valley park. Meet at Red Lock Trailhead off West Highland Road in Sagamore Hills Township.
Night orienteering — The North Eastern Ohio Orienteering Club will conduct a meet using a map and compass to negotiate a cross-country course at night. Meet at the Kendall Lake Shelter in the Cuyahoga Valley park. That's off Truxell Road in Boston Township. Registration is from 6 to 7 p.m. The event starts at dusk. Bring a flashlight and extra batteries. Whistles are required and are available for $1. Free compass loan. The fee is $8 a person. Junior Rangers — The National Park Service is presenting a Junior Rangers program about dancing in the forest for youngsters from 4 to 6 years old in the Cuyahoga Valley park. Park work — The Cuyahoga Valley Trails Council is seeking volunteers to help remove an old truck cab near the Cuyahoga River near Indian Springs mobile home park off Riverview Road in Cuyahoga Falls. The work will start at 9:30 a.m. Park on the street next to the connecting trail from the Towpath Trail to Indigo Lake. Wear sturdy boots and work gloves. Call 330-873-1035 for information.
Night bike ride — Metro Parks, Serving Summit County, is sponsoring a night bike ride at 7 p.m. starting at Deep Lock Quarry Metro Park. That's off Riverview Road south of state Route 303 in Peninsula. The ride will cover about 15 miles on the Towpath Trail. Bring your own bike, helmet and light. A campfire will follow. Towpath hike — The Akron Metro Parks Hiking Club will meet at 9 a.m. on the Towpath Trail at the Vanderhoof Trailhead. That's off Vanderhoof Road west of Manchester Road (state Route 93) in New Franklin. You can hike from one to 10 miles or more. Call 330-733-3995 for information.
Pioneers in the Park — The Medina County Park District will present Pioneers in the Park from noon to 6 p.m. at Buckeye Woods Park. It will continue from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. There will be pioneer crafts, skills, encampments, bluegrass and dulcimer music, pioneer games games and other activities. Native American folklorist Dan Fladung will entertain on Saturday. Family campfire — The Stark County Park District is staging a family campfire from 5 to 7 p.m. at the David Fichtner Outdoor Education Center, 12833 Market Ave. N., Lake Township. Call 330-477-3552 for information.
Valley hike — The Portage Trail Walkers hiking club will meet for a picnic at 6 p.m. and a moonlight walk on the Towpath Trail at 7 p.m. Meet at the Station Road Bridge Trailhead in the Cuyahoga Valley park. That's off Riverview Road south of state Route 82 in Brecksville.
Medina raptors — Laura Jordan of the Medina Raptor Center will be at the Wild Bird Center of Hudson from 1 to 3 p.m. along with live birds. The store is at 130 W. Streetsboro Road (state Route 303), Hudson. Call 330-655-2473 for information.
Barn party — Mount Union College's John T. Huston-Dr. John B. Brumbaugh Nature Center will host a barn party from 6 to 8 p.m. The center is on Daniel Street off state Route 183 six miles south of Alliance in Washington Township. Call 330-823-7487 for information.

Towpath hike — Naturalist Mike Greene of Metro Parks, Serving Summit County, will lead a round-trip hike of four miles along the Towpath Trail. Meet at 2 p.m. at the Vanderhoof Trailhead off Vanderhoof Road in New Franklin. Call 330-865-8065 for information.
Peninsula jazz — The Peninsula Library and Historical Society will stage the Peninsula Jazz Festival from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Happy Days Lodge in the Cuyahoga Valley park. That's off state Route 303 in Boston Heights. Free.
Goodyear Heights hike — The Akron Metro Parks Hiking Club will meet at 2:30 p.m. for a five-mile hike at Goodyear Heights Metro Park off Newton Street in East Akron. Call 330-733-3995 for information.

Full-moon hike — The National Park Service is directing a full-moon hike from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Cuyahoga Valley. Meet at the Pine Hollow Trailhead off Quick Road in Boston Township. It will be a 31/4-mile hike in the Kendall Lake area.
Trail run — You can join in a trail run in the Cuyahoga Valley park. Meet at 6 p.m. at the Octagon Shelter off Truxell Road in Boston Township. The run will be between 3 and 6 miles. Points and awards. The fee is $5 per runner or walker. Call 330-657-2909 for information.
Bats for kids — The Medina County Park District will present nature programs about bats for home-schooled youngsters at 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. at the Wolf Creek Environmental Center, 6100 Ridge Road (state Route 94), Sharon Township. White-tailed deer — The Stark County Park District is presenting a program about white-tailed deer at 6 p.m. at the Exploration Gateway, 5712 12th St. N.W., Perry Township. Call 330-477-3552 for reservations and information.
