Recycling tips — The Stark County Park District is presenting a program about recycling at 6 p.m. at the Exploration Gateway, 5712 12th St. NW, Perry Township. Call 330-477-3552 for reservations and information.
Hudson hike — The Akron Metro Parks Hiking Club will meet at 7 p.m. at the Barlow Community Center parking lot in Hudson for a sidewalk hike of three to four miles. The center is off South Oviatt Street. The hike includes a hot chocolate stop. Call 330-733-3995 for information.

Canal bonfire — Akron's historic Mustill Store will host a bonfire by the Ohio & Erie Canal from 7 to 9 p.m. There will be hot dogs and marshmallows, warm beverages, tours and Akron trivia games. Valley hike — The National Park Service is sponsoring a lantern hike of Ritchie Ledges in the Cuyahoga Valley park. It will run from 7 to 9 p.m. Meet at the Ledges Shelter off Truxell Road in Boston Township.
Lantern tours — Hale Farm and Village will present a lantern tour that takes participants back to 1863, and includes singing carols. Tours depart every 20 minutes from 6 to 8:20 p.m. The program will be repeated on Saturday. Tickets are $18. The farm is at 2686 Oak Hill Road, Bath Township. Planetarium show — The Wilderness Center off U.S. 250 near Wilmot will hold a planetarium show and, weather permitting, a star watch at 8 p.m. For all ages. Free. Call 330-359-5235 for information.
Venezuelan conservation — Cleveland Metroparks is kicking off a special program about Latin American conservation. Stan Searles, curator of ornithology at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, will speak about efforts since 1996 in Venezuela to reintroduce the Andes condor, as well as starting a sister zoo in Merida, Venezuela. His talk will be at 7:30 p.m. at the CanalWay Center off East 49th Street south of Grant Avenue in Cuyahoga Heights. Call 216-206-1000 for information.

Meet Mr. Edison — Historical interpreter Hank Finken will be inventor Thomas Alva Edison in a Cuyahoga Valley Lyceum program from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Cuyahoga Valley park. His program will be held at the Happy Days Lodge off state Route in Boston Heights. Tickets are $8, $3 for children 3 to 12 years old. Adopt a trail — Volunteers are needed to help the Cuyahoga Valley Trails Council clean up litter and maintain the Pine Grove and Ledges trails in the Cuyahoga Valley park. The work will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Meet at the Octagon Shelter off Truxell Road in Boston Township. Wear sturdy shoes or boots, dress for the weather and bring a small pack with work gloves, water and lunch. For information, check out http://www.cvtrailscouncil.org.
Animal lore — Naturalist Danusia Casteel of Metro Parks, Serving Summit County, will present a program about animal folklore at 2 p.m. during a 1.4-mile hike on the Parcours Trail. Tallmadge hike — The Portage Trail Walkers hiking club will meet at 9 a.m. for a five-mile round-trip hike to Munroe Falls Metro Park in nearby Munroe Falls. Meet at Lions Park off Lions Road in Tallmadge. Dress for the weather. Call 330-673-6896 for information.
Summit hike — The Akron Metro Parks Hiking Club will meet at 9 a.m. at the Bike & Hike Trail trailhead off state Route 303 just west of state Route 8 in Boston Heights. You can hike any distance you want along the trail. Call 330-733-3995 for information.
Wildlife hike — The Stark County Park District is staging a wildlife hike at 2 p.m. at Walborn Reservoir, 11324 Price St. NE, Marlboro Township. Call 330-477-3552 for information.
Healthy hike — The Medina County Park District is presenting a healthy hike of up to six miles at Whipp's Ledges in Hinckley Township. It will run from 9 to 11 a.m. Meet in the parking lot off State Road across from the Whipp's Ledges Picnic Area. For adults only. Call 330-722-9364 for information.

Park movie — Metro Parks, Serving Summit County, will screen the movie March of the Penguins. Naturalist Mike Greene will tell filmgoers how native birds survive winter. Meet at 2 p.m. at the Mingo Shelter in Sand Run Metro Park. That's off Sand Run Parkway in Northwest Akron. Free popcorn and lemonade. Seating is limited. Call 330-865-8065 for information.
Winter ramble — The National Park Service is staging a winter off-the-beaten track hike in the Cuyahoga Valley park. It will run from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Meet at park headquarters at Riverview and Vaughn roads in Brecksville. It will be a four-mile on-trail and off-trail exploration of ravines off the Buckeye Trail. Carpooling will be required. Sturdy shoes, cold-weather gear and water are recommended. For ages 12 and older only. Children must be accompanied by adults.
Holiday open house — The Medina County Park District will present a holiday open house from 12:30 to 4 p.m. at the Wolf Creek Environmental Center, 6100 Ridge Road (state Route 94), Sharon Township. Learn how to make festive ornaments and simple gifts using natural items. For ages 6 to adult. Free. Call 330-722-9364 for information.
