At a screening of Superbad, some audience members began to whisper when a dancing woman appeared on-screen, trying to remember who the familiar-looking actress was.
That can happen a lot in Judd Apatow productions, ranging from TV's Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared (both on DVD, so get them) to big-screen ventures like Anchorman, Talladega Nights, The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up.
While some Apatow perennials are big names like Will Ferrell, there are others who aren't generally above the title, but who pop up repeatedly in his productions. Some examples:
Jay Baruchel (Undeclared, Knocked Up). If you don't go to Apatow movies, you may know him as Danger in Million Dollar Baby.
Kevin Corrigan (Freaks and Geeks, Superbad). Was also Eddie on Grounded for Life.
Carla Gallo (Undeclared, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Superbad). The dancing woman in Superbad, she was especially impressive as Libby on Carnivale.
Jonah Hill (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Superbad). Was also in cult comedy Accepted, starring Justin Long.
Dave Koechner (Freaks and Geeks, Anchorman, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Talladega Nights). Also known as Todd Packer on the U.S. version of The Office, and half of The Naked Trucker and T-Bones act (with Dave ''Gruber'' Allen, also of Freaks and Geeks).
David Krumholtz (Freaks and Geeks, Undeclared, Superbad). You know him from CBS' Numb3rs.
Leslie Mann (Freaks and Geeks, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up). Also known as Mrs. Judd Apatow, and as Jon Stewart's fiancee in Adam Sandler's Big Daddy.
Seth Rogen (Freaks and Geeks, Undeclared, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Superbad). Also known for Donnie Darko.
Paul Rudd (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy). Also known as Phoebe's boyfriend and eventual husband on Friends.
Jason Segel (Freaks and Geeks, Undeclared, Knocked Up). Currently co-starring on How I Met Your Mother.
Martin Starr (Freaks and Geeks, Knocked Up, Superbad). Was in the miniseries Revelations. But if you really want to see what he can do, go back to Freaks and Geeks, in which he was terrific as the geek Bill.
In fact, that's one example of why people work with Apatow. They get interesting, quality work.
