Watchmen In Trouble? The big-screen adaptation of the comic book by Alan Moore and David Gibbons is being buzzed about — and has been on the cover of Entertainment Weekly — even though it doesn't hit theaters until March 2009. But it reportedly hit a bump on Tuesday.
Studio 20th Century Fox aims to stop the movie, from rival Warner Bros., contending that Fox still owns the rights and Warner never got them. And a federal judge this week refused Warner's motion to dismiss Fox's legal action.
''We will be asking the court to enforce Fox's copyright interests in The Watchmen and enjoin the release of the Warner Brothers film and any related Watchmen media that violate our copyright interests in that property,'' Fox said in a statement to Deadline Hollywood Daily.

More Watchmen. ''The court's ruling simply means that the parties will engage in discovery and proceed with the litigation,'' said a Warner statement to DHD. ''The judge did not opine at all on the merits, other than to conclude that Fox satisfied the pleading requirements. We respectfully disagree with Fox's position and do not believe they have any rights in and to this project.''
Adds the site Cinematical: ''It's unlikely that the movie will really be delayed — but it is possible that Warner Bros. will have to hand Fox a substantial chunk of change in order to release the film.''

Rough Diamond. In a new biography of Neil Diamond, author David Wild says the singer-songwriter once tried to star on-screen as groundbreaking comic Lenny Bruce.
Diamond ''even did a successful screen test,'' the New York Post reports. It quotes Wild's book as saying ''in just a few seconds, he somehow transformed himself into a believable dirty-mouthed, Constitution-defending comedian.''
But the role, in the movie Lenny, went to Dustin Hoffman. Wild's book, He Is . . . I Say: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Neil Diamond, is due in stores in late October.

Applegate Had Mastectomy. In her fight with cancer, Samantha Who? star Christina Applegate opted for a double mastectomy.
''My decision, after looking at all the treatment plans that were possibilities for me, the only one that seemed the most logical and the one that was going to work for me was to have a bilateral mastectomy,'' Applegate said on ABC's Good Morning America.
But she now says she is ''100 percent clear and clean.''
The cancer ''did not spread,'' she said. ''They got everything out, so I'm definitely not going to die from breast cancer.''

Wedding Bell Blues. Former Saturday Night Live player Chris Kattan has separated from wife Sunshine Tuft. They really tried to make it work, too. They've been married for eight weeks.
And might — I said might — still work things out. They are ''separated for the moment,'' Kattan's rep Jill Fritzo told the New York Daily News on Tuesday. But they have ''no plans for divorce at this time.'' Nor was a reason given for the separation. But Fritzo said it did not involve a third party.

Jason Meets Elmo. University of Akron grad Jason Taylor, now with the Washington Redskins, is set to appear on Sesame Street today. He will be tossing a football with Elmo. Besides his football exploits, you should remember Taylor from Dancing With the Stars.•
Trivia Time. In answer to Sunday's question, Richard Burton was nominated for an Oscar seven times without winning — once as best supporting actor (My Cousin Rachel) and six times as best actor (The Robe, Becket, The Spy Who Came in From the Cold, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Anne of the Thousand Days and Equus.) He never won, but does not have the record for acting nominations without a win. While Peter O'Toole has an honorary Oscar, he has never won a competitive Oscar even after eight nominations.
