Food Notes
Chrissie Hynde's restaurant is talk of town

Already open for dinner, VegiTerranean to begin serving lunch Monday

Finally.

That's what I'm sure many of you are saying about the opening of rocker Chrissie Hynde's new restaurant, VegiTerranean.

After the ceremonial ribbon-cutting in September, plenty of you were getting anxious about when the place would actually open for business.

The vegetarian restaurant, bar, bakery and coffee shop officially opened to the public on Friday. Chef Scot Jones reports all is going well so far.

The place is open for dinner from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. this week, and will begin serving lunch daily on Monday.

Hynde, an Akron native and lead singer of the Pretenders, partnered with Canton restaurateur Dan Duplain in the venture.

VegiTerranean is at 21 Furnace St. in the Northside Lofts, just north of downtown Akron. Call 330-374-5550 for reservations. For information, visit http://www.thevegiterranean.

Ly's will be back

Ricky Ly's Chinese Gourmet on Dressler Road Northwest in Jackson Township closed Sunday, but the Ly family promises it will be back.

The family opened Ly's Thai Gourmet in Beachwood in January, and because of that restaurant's success, has decided to focus on opening additional Ly's Thai Gourmets.

Two more are planned for 2008 — one in the Westfield Belden Village area and one in Columbus.

Ly's Chinese Gourmet had been a Canton-area fixture for nearly 20 years.

It's a honey of a recipe

Kudos to Wadsworth resident Cathy Hudak.

Her recipe for Honey Pecan Pie was selected to be in Taste of Home magazine's 2008 Annual Recipes Cookbook.

The book has more than 500 recipes, including every one that was featured in the magazine in 2007.

Cookbook for sale

If you are planning to visit the Holiday Tree Festival for Akron Children's Hospital, you might want to check out its cookbook.

A Special Gift: Memories and Recipes From 25 Years of the Holiday Tree Festival will be on sale for $7.

The 65-page book includes nearly 100 recipes, as well as photos from the past 25 years of festivals.

Proceeds from the cookbook sale benefit Children's Hospital. The festival runs Nov. 17-25 at the John S. Knight Center, 77 E. Mill St., Akron.

Women are cooking

Women community leaders from throughout the Akron area are tying on their aprons for this year's Cookin' for a Cause.

They'll prepare their favorite dishes for the public to taste, with the proceeds going to benefit the Minerva Foundation of Akron, an education and economic empowerment program for women and girls.

I have it on good authority that Karen Lefton, general counsel for the Akron Beacon Journal, will be preparing a crab bisque that's rich with heavy cream.

The event will be at 6 p.m. Friday at the St. Joseph Family Center, 610 W. Exchange St. Tickets are $40; patron tickets are $100.

The event is organized by the Akron Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and the Minerva Foundation of Akron. For tickets or information, call 330-696-5115.

Who needs wine?

How's this for a twist on the traditional wine dinner — Fleming's Restaurant is holding a scotch dinner.

On Nov. 30, the restaurant will host Robert Sickler, master of whiskey for Johnnie Walker.

Sickler will lead patrons through a five-course meal that begins with bacon-wrapped scallops with a sweet chili glaze and ends with an artisanal cheese course. In between, there's filet mignon, Alaskan salmon and chocolate amaretto torte.

Each course is accompanied by a different Johnnie Walker scotch, and discussion by Sickler on how the whiskey complements each food selection.

The scotch dinner is $75, plus tax and tip. For reservations, call 330-670-5200.

Fleming's is at 4000 Medina Road in the Montrose area of Copley Township.

Going his own way

He was in the kitchen when Misto 1238 opened in July, but Chef Louis Prpich has parted ways with the Merriman Valley restaurant.

Prpich tells me he now will focus on his four-year-old catering business, Culinary Creations Catering, through which he also provides in-home instruction. To contact him, send e-mail to chefprpich@yahoo.com or call 330-687-0769.

Buy one, get one

If you want to take advantage of the Olde Harbor Inn's buy-one-get-one gift certificate offer on the Friday after Thanksgiving, you don't have to wait in line — just head to your computer.

Owner Steve Burroughs said he's hoping that allowing customers to buy the certificates online may alleviate some of the traffic near his Coventry Township restaurant.

The gift certificate sale is a one-day event on Nov. 23. The certificates must be a minimum of $20. To purchase online, visit http://www.theoldeharborinn.
/> com.

The restaurant also will be selling its certificates that day from kiosks in Summit Mall and Westfield Belden Village Mall.

If you're up for the adventure, the Harbor Inn is at 562 Portage Lakes Drive.

Gingerbread bakers

Laurel Lake Retirement Community is looking for bakers — professional chefs, creative home cooks, school classes, anyone who is interested in making a gingerbread house.

The retirement village is looking to put together a gingerbread village that will be on display Dec. 2-7.

Visitors to the village will cast their ballots for best gingerbread house.

To enter a house, call Donna Anderson at 330-655-1436 by Tuesday.

Laurel Lake is at 200 Laurel Lake Drive, Hudson.

Cakes and cookies

Reeves Cake Shop in Akron will host its holiday open house from noon to 4 p.m. Nov. 24.

This is your chance to sample the shop's cakes and cookies before you place your holiday orders. Reeves is at 2770 Cory Ave. Call 330-848-1036 or visit the shop's Web site at http://www.reevescakeshop.com.

They're all winners

Finally this week, some names I've been wanting to get in the paper — winners in local food contests.

We'll start with the Nov. 3 Dessert First Gala to benefit the Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio. The challenge for these professional chefs was to create a gourmet dessert using Girl Scout cookies as one of the main ingredients.

Placing first with the judges was Susan Geul, pastry chef at Blue Canyon Kitchen & Tavern in Twinsburg, for her Mini Lemon Meringue Tartlets. People's Choice winner was Jared Kirby, executive chef for Moe's Restaurant in Cuyahoga Falls, for his Caramelized Bananas. Winner of the taste test by an actual troop of Girl Scouts was Chef Neil Donaldson of LeFever's Grille in Cuyahoga Falls for his Thin Mint Truffles.

Winners of the Acme Fresh Market's Family Meals and Memories recipe contest were Taunya Bush of Clinton, who won in the adult division for her Snowy Coconut Cake; and Derek Switaj of Kent, who won the teen division for his Easy Chocolate Trifle.

Lisa A. Abraham can be reached at 330-996-3737 or labraham@thebeaconjournal.com.
