More Miley Movie. Now that the Walt Disney Co. has exploited all those kids who desperately sought tickets for what was supposed to be a short run of the Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour movie, Reuters says the movie will be available beyond its expected end this Thursday.
''Now theaters will be able to play the movie as long as they like,'' a Disney rep told Reuters. While Entertainment Weekly indicated the extended run will only be at ''some locations,'' the Cinemark Valley View appears to be among them; it has showings listed through Feb. 14. And why is that happening? Because money talks, as the next item demonstrates.
Millions for Miley. Disney's strategy with the Hannah/Miley movie paid huge dividends at the box office over the weekend.
Disney announced that the movie would run only one week, then limited it to less than 700 theaters, creating a big appetite among the young fans of singer-actress Miley Cyrus, who plays Hannah in the Disney Channel series.
The result: $29 million in ticket sales, making it the weekend's top movie, says Box Office Mojo. Reuters said that's the biggest opening ever for a movie on Super Bowl weekend.
Even though Hannah/Miley was in relatively few theaters, it averaged more than $42,000 per venue, the movie Web site reported.
For comparison, the second-best movie of the week was the Jessica Alba thriller The Eye. Even though it was in 2,436 theaters, it took in $13 million and averaged about $5,300 per theater.
Third-ranked 27 Dresses grossed $8.4 million (about $2,800 per theater).
Wedding Bells. Katharine McPhee, the runner-up in the fifth season of American Idol, has married producer Nick Cokas, People.com reports.
She's 23. He's 42. They met before she appeared on Idol, got engaged in 2007 and tied the knot Saturday in Beverly Hills Presbyterian Church.
According to People, McPhee ''wore a strapless ivory Manuel Mota gown and Neil Lane jewels (diamond and platinum chandelier earrings and diamond and platinum bracelets).'' (Her engagement ring is also platinum and diamond.) Cokas wore an Armani tuxedo.
Recently dropped by her record label, McPhee is trying movies; People says she's finished work on I Know What Boys Like with Anna Faris.
Sale Time. Eddie Murphy has shed both a spouse and a house in recent weeks.
The actor famously ended his relationship with Tracey Edmonds two weeks after a wedding ceremony — although before having one that was legally binding. Now the Los Angeles Times reports that he and first wife Nicole Mitchell Murphy have sold their house near Sacramento, Calif. For $6.1 million.
''The 10-bedroom, multilevel home in a gated community has an 11,000-square-foot main house and a detached, 5,200-square-foot guesthouse,'' says the Times. ''There are two guest suites.
''There is a home theater with a video-game arcade, a tennis court, a gym, an infinity pool, a spa and an outdoor kitchen with a barbecue.''
The ''compound,'' as the Times calls it, is about 2.5-plus acres.
Just in case the word compound doesn't remind you that the rich live differently than the rest of us do, consider this aside in the article: ''The Murphys considered it their vacation home.''
Picky Paris. The New York Daily News notes that Paris Hilton is happy to talk about her new movie, The Hottie and the Nottie, but NOT about a lot of other things.
The News quoted a ''friendly reminder'' from a publicist that Hilton ''will not address any personal or uncomfortable questions. Her publicist will stop the interview if you go down that . . . DARK PATH!''
And what is on the dark path? Jail time, Britney Spears, anything that might upset (Hilton), a studio rep told the News.
