Area agencies combine forces to bring health care to homeless

Area social services are working together to bring free medical care and other support to Akron's homeless during Project Homeless Connect Day on April 29.

The Akron/Summit County Continuum of Care is seeking donations for the event, which will be at the Salvation Army on South Maple Street in Akron.

The initiative wants to provide free vision care, legal aid, medical testing, food, wheelchair repair and haircuts to more than 200 homeless people from the community during the inaugural daylong event.

''It's something that's based on an annual event that's held across the country in different cities to provide services for the homeless at a one-stop shop,'' said Jackie Hemsworth, one of the volunteers working on the event.

Individuals, organizations and businesses that would like to support the effort can contact Hemsworth at 330-315-3755 or jackie.hemsworth@omcdc.org.

Discount available

Help is available for Ohio residents who can't afford their prescriptions.

The Ohio's Best Rx state prescription drug discount program recently announced updated eligibility guidelines.

The discount program is available to any Ohio resident without prescription drug coverage.

For those 60 or older, there is no income restriction to qualify. For residents younger than 60, annual household income must be at or below 300 percent of the federal poverty level.

Under new 2008 federal guidelines released last week, an individual who earns $31,200 a year is eligible.

This year's eligibility cutoff is $42,000 for a family of two, $52,800 for a family of three, $63,600 for a family of four and $74,400 for a family of five.

Participants save an average of 34 percent on prescription drugs at participating pharmacies, according to Ohio's Best Rx.

Enrollment in the program is free. Call 866-923-7879 or visit http://www.ohiobestrx.org for information or to enroll.
