The United Way of Summit County Volunteer Center recruits and refers volunteers to area nonprofit organizations and other groups required to incorporate volunteer programs for accreditation.
The following organizations need volunteers. For details about these and other volunteer opportunities, contact the Volunteer Center, 90 N. Prospect St., Akron, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays at 330-762-7601, Ext. 5512, or http://www.uwsummit.org.
Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank: Volunteers needed 4 to 8 p.m. March 24 and April 28 to sort and repack donated food. Minimum age: 18, 12 with adult supervision.
Akron City Hospital (Summa Health System): Volunteers needed 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays to escort patients, provide wheelchair transportation, deliver items to departments and and gather wheelchairs. Minimum age: 18.
Akron Urban League: Volunteers needed 2:30 to 7 p.m. weekdays to help with after- school program for children ages 5 to 12. Minimum age: 16.
American Red Cross, Summit County: Volunteers wanted to train individuals in first aid, CPR and AED. Minimum age: 18.
Career Nurse Assistants Program: Volunteers wanted 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays to help organize club for nursing assistants. Minimum age: 21.
CYO and Community Services: Volunteers needed two Saturdays a month to help with Recreational Respite program activities, such as swimming, arts and crafts, cooking and games. Minimum age: 13.
Greater Cleveland Sports Commission: Volunteers are needed April 11-13 for the second annual ASICS University & FILA Cadet National Wrestling Championships in Akron. Minimum age: 16.
Habitat for Humanity of Summit County: Volunteers wanted 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays to help pick up donations of building materials. Minimum age: 18.
Hattie Larlham Supported Living: Volunteers needed to provide home improvements and repairs to Summit County-based supported-living homes. Minimum age: 18, 16 with supervision.
Junior Achievement of Akron Area: Student volunteers needed 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. during spring break weeks to make phone calls for the ''Giving for Kids Campaign.'' Minimum age: 15.
Keep Akron Beautiful: Volunteers needed for annual ''Clean Up Akron Week,'' April 26-May 3; Super Saturday, May 3. Minimum age: 18, younger with adult supervision and waiver.
Library Shop on Main: Volunteers wanted on a flexible basis to help with sales, restocking, shelving and customer service. Minimum age: 18.
Northcoast Behavioral Healthcare (Northfield): Volunteers wanted to perform musical, acting, seasonal and holiday presentations. Minimum age: 18.
Northern Ohio Recovery Association: Volunteers needed a minimum of one hour per week to mentor individuals recovering from alcohol, tobacco and/or drugs. Minimum age: 21.
One of a Kind Pets Rescue: Volunteers wanted to provide foster care for animals in their homes until adopted into permanent homes. Supplies provided. Minimum age: 18 (families also welcome).
Pregnancy Care of Summit County: Volunteers wanted weekdays to help staff interviewing clients, teach classes, office/clerical, speaking engagements, etc. Minimum age: 18.
Regina Health Center (Richfield): Volunteers needed 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily to wash wheelchairs for residents. Minimum age: 15.
Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP): Volunteers wanted to phone and check on individuals who live alone and need daily contact. Minimum age: 55.
Rockynol Retirement Community: Volunteers needed 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. daily to greet residents and pour coffee during breakfast. Minimum age: 16.
Weathervane Community Playhouse: Volunteers wanted on a flexible basis, pending show times, to welcome visitors, accept tickets and direct members for seating. Minimum age: 21.
