County extension on the Web

The nation's 94-year-old Cooperative Extension System is reaching out to the public via its Web site, http://www.extension.org.

The site is designed to provide quick access to information on diverse topics, including personal finance, parenting, gardening, lawn care, farming and wildlife damage management. The information comes from more than 100 land-grant colleges and universities and thousands of county extension offices across the country.

Plant-your-own classes

Paul's Greenhouse, 1993 Wright Road, Copley Township, is offering plant-your-own container gardening classes this spring.

Participants bring their own containers and may plant up to five per class. They get guidance from the greenhouse staff but pay only for soil and plants.

Classes are offered from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 to 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays from April 14 to 26, and 6 to 8 p.m. April 15 and 24. To register, call 330-864-3417.

Sweepstakes, contests

Contests to note:

• The Maids Home Services is giving away prizes, including a year's worth of free housecleaning and a vacation package to anywhere in the continental United States, in its Nobody Outcleans the Maids Instant Win Sweepstakes. Enter daily at http://www.maids.com. The contest ends May 31.

• DIY Network will award an outdoor makeover to the winner of America's Most Desperate Landscape Search. Submit photos and videos of landscapes in need of renovation at http://www.diynetwork.com. The winning makeover will be documented and featured in an episode of the series Desperate Landscapes. Deadline is April 21.

• Youth gardening programs that focus on nutrition education will be recognized in Gardener's Supply Co.'s eighth annual Healthy Sprouts Awards. Twenty programs will receive Gardener's Supply gift cards ($500 for each of the top five programs; $200 for each of the other 15), as well as garden curriculum packages.
