Volunteers - March 24

 

The United Way of Summit County Volunteer Center recruits and refers volunteers to area nonprofit organizations and other groups required to incorporate volunteer programs for accreditation.

The following organizations need volunteers. For details about these and other volunteer opportunities, contact the Volunteer Center, 90 N. Prospect St., Akron, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays at 330-762-7601, Ext. 5512, or http://www.uwsummit.org.

ACCESS Inc.: Volunteers needed 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 29 to help with Project Homeless Connect, a one-stop shop for delivering services to homeless people. Minimum age: 18.

Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank: Volunteers needed 4 to 8 p.m. March 24 and April 28 to sort and repack donated food. Minimum age: 18, 12 with adult supervision.

The Arc of Summit & Portage Counties: Volunteers wanted to help staff with coordinate special events and grant writing. Minimum age: 18.

Catholic Social Services: Volunteers wanted Tuesday afternoons and Wednesday mornings to assist with preparation of hot-meals program. Minimum age: 14, 12 with adult supervision.

Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital (Summa Health System): Volunteers needed weekdays between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. to help in various departments of the hospital. Minimum age: 18, 14 with adult supervision.

Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio: Volunteers wanted to serve as teen advisers or guest speakers. Minimum age: 18.

Greater Cleveland Sports Commission: Volunteers are needed April 11, 12 and/or 13 for the second annual ASICS University & FILA Cadet National Wrestling Championships at the University of Akron Athletics Field House. Minimum age: 16.

Heartland Home Healthcare & Hospice: Volunteers wanted to visit with hospice patients at home or in nursing homes. Minimum age: 18.

Hospice of Summa: Volunteers needed to provide vocal or instrumental talent to comfort patients. Minimum age: 18 and one year out of high school.

International Institute of Akron: Volunteer ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) instructor assistants needed one hour or more 9 a.m. to noon weekdays, 5 to 7 p.m. Mondays or Wednesdays to help with clerical support.

Junior Achievement of Akron Area: Student volunteers needed 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays to make phone calls for the ''Giving for Kids Campaign.'' Minimum age: 15.

Keep Akron Beautiful: Volunteers needed for annual Clean up Akron Week, April 26-May 3; Super Saturday, May 3. Minimum age: 18, younger with adult supervision and waiver.

Laurel Lake Retirement Community: Volunteers wanted evenings to answer calls, direct guests and help with clerical work. Minimum age: 18.

Lighter Than Air Society: Volunteers wanted to help coordinate volunteer programs and trainings. Minimum age: 21.

National MS Society: Volunteers wanted from 9:30 a.m. to noon Tuesdays to help with craft classes. Minimum age: 18.

Ohio Department of Rehabilitation & Corrections/Oriana House: Volunteers wanted to attend a support and mentoring group for ex-offenders 3 to 5 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. Minimum age: 18.

Packard Institute: Volunteers wanted 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays to assist in various areas (such as yoga and/or martial art instructors, personal trainers, artists, grant writers, office/clerical) of the counseling center for teens and their families. Minimum age: 18.

Precious Lives Sanctuary Inc.: Volunteers wanted between 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays to answer phones and set animal-care appointments. Minimum age: 18.

Project: LEARN of Summit County: Volunteers needed to tutor adults three hours per week. Next training scheduled in April; workshop fee is $25. One-year commitment. Minimum age: 18.

Written Communication Radio Service (WCRS): Volunteers wanted daily to read printed materials on radio broadcast to visually impaired/physically disabled individuals. Minimum age: 18.
