Stan Hywet to reopen
Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens reopens for the season Tuesday, and things promise to be a little funkier than usual at the historical estate.
Artist P.R. Miller, who specializes in turning junk into sculpture, is artist-in-residence this year. He'll offer programming and is making 100 giant flowers for the property out of such materials as plastic purgings and machine turnings.
Other events planned this season include the opening of the restored London Plane Tree Allee, an exhibit of Gertrude Penfield Seiberling's art, a display on the history of marbles and the premiere of a documentary about the spiritual underpinnings of Alcoholics Anonymous.
Stan Hywet will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays as well as Memorial Day and Labor Day. A self-guided Manor House tour is $12; a guided tour is $18. Students and members get discounts.
