Food Notes
It's hopping now at Main Street Grill in Portage

Brewpub plans to work up to eight beers by July. Wine tasting Saturday at Shisler's Cheese House

Listen up, beer drinkers — Main Street Grill and Brewing Co. in Garrettsville finally has its brew works up and running and will start serving beer on Saturday.

Owners Pete and Peggy Kepich opened the restaurant in March 2007, with the goal of eventually brewing their own beer. Pete Kepich said there will be four beers on tap to start, but by July the brewpub will be making and serving eight.

In addition, there's a full menu with a wide array of options, from burgers to lobster tail.

In the kitchen is chef Sheldon Lewis, while brewmaster Virgil Drayer-Reed is making the suds.

Main Street is at 8148 Main St., Garrettsville. Hours are 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday, noon to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday. It's closed on Mondays. Call 330-527-3663.

All hail the mighty chefs

Tickets are still available for Hail to the Chefs! — the preview party for this summer's Taste of Hudson.

The event begins with a wine tasting at 7 p.m. Saturday and continues at 8 p.m. with food tastings from nine area restaurants. Hudson's own Western Reserve School of Cooking is making the desserts.

There's a silent auction and music, too. The party's at the Hudson Library & Historical Society on Library Street in Hudson.

Tickets are $100, available online at http://www.tasteofhudson.com. Proceeds will benefit the Safe Kids Coalition of Summit County.

This year's Taste of Hudson will be Sunday and Monday of Labor Day weekend, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1.

Cheese with that wine?

Shisler's Cheese House in Copley Township is holding a wine tasting on Saturday from 7 to 10 p.m., featuring wines for the summer.

The tasting includes both reds and whites and plenty of accompanying cheeses. There also will be live music.

The event is $25. Shisler's is at 1275 S. Cleveland-Massillon Road. Call 330-665-3434 for reservations, which are strongly recommended.

Reunited on the bayou

Together again are chefs Angus McIntosh and Dan Hermes for a six-course meal of new Louisiana cuisine that will be served at McIntosh's Iris restaurant in downtown Canton on June 5.

The menu for Born on the Bayou, a Taste of Louisiana includes Creole shrimp dumplings, duck gumbo, sweet potato crusted snapper, bayou chicken and Cajun custard pie.

McIntosh and Hermes, who is chef of the Black Heath at Glenmoor Country Club, together opened Lagniappe restaurant in Houston back in 1994.

The dinner starts at 6 p.m. and costs $50.

Iris is at 228 Fourth St. N.W. in Canton. Call 330-313-1519 for reservations.

Hiya, cupcake

The pastry chefs from Dante in Valley View are leaving to start their own bakery.

Wendy Thompson and SynDee Klingenberg are expecting to open A Cookie and A Cupcake in Cleveland's Tremont neighborhood by late summer.

The shop will offer custom, artistically designed cakes in classic flavors including carrot, German chocolate and red velvet, as well as cookies, brownies, and hand-decorated designer cupcakes in 12 different flavors.

Thompson has been the executive pastry chef at Dante (formerly Lockkeepers) for six years and Klingenberg has been the pastry sous chef.

The shop will be at 2173 Professor St. They're already taking orders for cakes online at http://www.acookieandacupcake.com.

Thirsty?

Head to the West Point Market, 1711 W. Market St., where the annual Rose Soiree wine tasting is from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday.

About 20 different wines, all rose, will be poured, and tickets can be purchased for individual tastes.
