Cheesy celebration
Whether you're sweet on Swiss or think cheddar is better, mark your calendar for June 13 and 14 for the annual Ohio Cheese Festival at Heini's Cheese Chalet in Millersburg.
The chalet kicked off the event last year, and visitors from across the country descended upon Amish country to take part. The festival features food from more than 30 vendors, handmade crafts, music, a petting zoo, Amish buggy rides and, of course, plenty of cheese.
The cheese festival is noon to 8 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday. Heini's is at 6005 County Road 77 in Millersburg.
Kids get cooking
This year there's a new program for the younger visitors to the Farmers Market at Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens. The Cuyahoga Valley Countryside Conservancy, which sponsors the market, has started a Junior Chef's Program.
On July 10, July 24 and Aug. 7, chefs will meet with children, take them through the market to purchase food and then prepare a recipe with the ingredients they purchased.
The program is open to children ages 7 to 12, and is designed to help kids learn about nutrition, seasonal foods and cooking. Each class is $40 per child and reservations are required. Call 330-657-2538.
Gourmets in the Garden
For adults, the Cleveland Botanical Garden's outdoor cooking series, Gourmets in the Garden, will return for a fourth year. The program is held at 6 p.m. Wednesdays, June 18 through Sept. 3.
Cooking demonstrations will be held on the garden's Geis Terrace, where local chefs will show how to prepare a variety of dishes at home using local ingredients and will offer samples of their work.
The programs are free with paid admission to the garden, which is reduced to $5 every Wednesday after 5 p.m. The garden is at 11030 East Blvd. in the University Circle area of Cleveland.
Gourmets in the Garden coincides with WOW! Wade Oval Wednesdays, a series of free public concerts in Wade Oval presented by University Circle Inc. For information about the program, visit http://www.cbgarden.org.
