• Beacon Journal columnist Betsy Lammerding received the DOVIA Greater Akron Voice for Volunteerism Award. The award recognizes an individual who has significantly promoted volunteerism and community service through the media.
• Jim Shriner of Akron was the May volunteer of the month at Metro Parks, Serving Summit County. He was in costume as MetroLeaf — the symbol of the park district — during the park district's Earth Day celebration and also volunteers at the park district headquarters. The volunteer honored in April was Carolyn Narotsky of Akron, who has donated her time since 1992. School news
• Allison R. Gooding of Massillon, Cassandra A. King of Munroe Falls and Hope C. Walton of Medina were inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa, the national leadership honorary at Muskingum College.
• Deb Herold, a fourth-grade teacher at Madge Youtz Elementary School in Canton, was named Teacher of the Month for the Akron-Canton area in May by the Ohio Lottery.
• Graduating senior Eric Calabretta, son of Carrol Ostrum, won a Life Award from the University of Akron as outstanding senior.
• Six Akron-Canton area students received departmental awards at the Academic Honors Convocation at Ashland University: Megan Csiszar of Medina, the Junior Award from the Department of Foreign Language; Christina DeCarbo of Uniontown, the Senior Award from the Department of Early Childhood Education; Melissa Loar of Alliance, the Sophomore Award from the Department of Communication Arts; Kerry Miles of Richfield, the Sophomore Award from the Department of Management; Jacqueline Skiba of Medina, the Sophomore Award from the Department of Biology/Toxicology; and Jillian Yoder of Marshallville, the Senior Award from the Department of Psychology.
• At its annual Alumni Day in May, the University of Akron gave Alumni Awards to Glynis Wheeler Redwine, class of 1977, vice president of human resource compliance programs at Alcon; Ohio Sen. Tom Sawyer, class of 1968 and 1970, a Democratic state representative for the 28th district; Jim Tressel, class of 1977, head football coach at Ohio State; and Dr. Gary Williams, class of 1968, an Akron surgeon. Honorary Alumni Awards went to philanthropist Kathleen Coleman; Suzanne Morgan, chairman of the Margaret Clark Morgan Foundation; UA President Luis M. Proenza and his wife, Theresa; and former UA trustee chairman Dr. William Demas.
• The University of Akron School of Law Alumni Association honored the following alumni with Outstanding Alumni Awards in May: William M. Oldham, class of 1967; E. Jane Taylor, class of 1980; and Joseph E. Reece, class of 1987. Richard L. Aynes received the Honorary Alumni Award. Adjunct faculty member K. William Bailey received the John R. Quine Award as the Outstanding Adjunct Faculty member; Professor Jane Campbell Moriarty, the Thomas G. Byers Memorial Award for Outstanding Faculty Publication; and Matthew Vansuch, the Outstanding Alumni Publication Award.
• Revere High School sophomore Luke Berry of Akron was selected to represent his school at the 2008 Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership seminar at Mount Union College.
• Muskingum College student Jessica M. Selzer of Clinton was inducted into the Lambda Sigma Society, a national honor society for second-year men and women.
• The Tire Town chapter of the International Association of Administrative Professionals gave $1,500 scholarships to Kenmore High graduate Amber Adams, who will study international business at Taylor University next fall; East High graduate LaToya Lewis, who will study accounting at the University of Toledo; Garfield High graduate Dominique Jackson, who will study business administration at Ohio State; and Garfield High graduate Diana Ratsavong, who also will study business at Ohio State.
• The Cuyahoga Portage chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution presented Our Lady of the Elms' students Alesia Fiocca, a seventh-grader, and Lashae Foster, an eighth-grader, with awards for their American history essays on the topic ''I Spy Espionage During the American Revolution.'' Senior Marissa Patterson won the Good Citizen Award for her essay.
• Canal Fulton resident Thomas Kohli was named the top master of education degree recipient and a member of the Academic Hall of Fame at Ashland University's commencement in May.
• Cenell Munford-Clark, assistant professor of human performance and sport management at Mount Union College, was inducted into the Stark County Women's Hall of Fame for her dedication to women's health and fitness.
• Cargill Inc. awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Elizabeth Tackett of Barberton, a 2008 graduate of Barberton High. The high school library will receive $200 from Cargill in Tackett's honor. Military news
• Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Katherine A. Friess graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. She is the daughter of Judith Lewis of Hudson and granddaughter of Marge Donley of Macedonia. She is a 2005 graduate of Nordonia High School, Macedonia.
• Army Reserve Pvt. Dylan J. Boreman, son of Don and Karen Boreman of Wooster, graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. He is a 2005 graduate of Wooster High School.
• Army Pvt. Jesse A. Strouse, son of Todd Strouse and Rennee Cozzli, both of Akron, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Sill in Lawton, Okla. He is a 2006 graduate of Manchester High School
• Air Force Airman Chase C. Simons, son of Cheryl Burke and of Charles Simons, both of Mantua, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2006 graduate of Crestwood High School in Mantua.
• Army National Guard Pvt. Christen M. Misja, daughter of Jacqueline and David Misja of Louisville, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C. She is a 2003 graduate of Medina High School.
