• Akron Municipal Court Clerk Jim Laria was named ''Clerk of the Year'' by the Ohio Association of Municipal/County Court Clerks. The Republican has served as clerk of courts for 11 years and manages the state's fifth-largest municipal court. His office handles more than $11 million a year. He is challenging Democrat incumbent Russ Pry for the job of Summit County executive.
School news
• Kristy Raines, a senior at East High School in Akron, received the 2008 Holmes-Davis Memorial Scholarship. East High alumnus Walter L. Davis III, sheriff of Delaware County in Delaware, Ohio, established the fund.
• Sukhmani Kaur, a second-grader from Hillcrest Elementary in Richfield, won the Shade Foundation's 2008 poster contest for her poster that used chess pieces to promote sun safety.
• Cristina Croitoru of the University of Akron is the Zonta Club of Akron, Barberton and Cuyahoga Falls' 2008 Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholar. The native of Romania is pursuing a double major in international business and accounting. She wins a $250 book scholarship from the local service organization and will compete for a $5,000 scholarship that goes to the international winner.
• PPG Inc. announced that Ca-sey L. Holzapfel, daughter of John Holzapfel and Ruth Holzapfel, received a $1,500 per year, four-year plant community scholarship from the PPG Industries Foundation. Holzapfel, a 2008 graduate of Norton High, will attend the Eastman School of Music.
• PPG Inc. announced that Ali-son M. Dickerhoof, daughter of Mark and Sheryl Dickerhoof, received a $1,500 per year, four-year plant employee child community scholarship from the PPG Industries Foundation. Dickerhoof, a 2008 graduate of Ravenna High, will major in psychology at Kent State.
• These Archbishop Hoban High School students scored in the top 10 percentile of the Grand Concours National French Test: Stephanie Padula of Uniontown, Rachael Hershey of Wadsworth, Kathy Toth of Mogadore, Caroline Dzeba of Barberton and Marjorie Cantine of Akron.
• Archbishop Hoban High School students Katy Savako of Ravenna and Meg Goulet of Akron scored in the top 5 percentile in the 2008 National Spanish Exam.
• St. Vincent-St. Mary High student Vincent W. Pelini, son of John and Cynthia Pelini of Rittman, was a winner of this year's Saint Michael's College Scholarship and Service Book Award. The award recognizes students who demonstrate a commitment to volunteerism and leadership through community service.
• Justin LeFever, a graduating senior at Akron Garfield and Akron East High School, received one of 10 GM Goodwrench Scholarships awarded nationwide. The scholarship will allow him to attend a GM-certified automotive technology program at Stark State College. He graduated from Garfield High and took part in the Akron school district's automotive program at East High.
• The National Garden Club gave a $3,500 scholarship to Laine Elizabeth Frantz of Wooster. She was one of 34 students nationwide to receive the club's scholarships.
• Erin Wright, an Akron resident and graduate of Walsh Jesuit High School, was named the Dan F. Lockhart Outstanding Senior at the College of Wooster. Wright earned a self-designed degree in neuroscience and will attend the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and Pharmacy this fall.
• Charisse Harris of Fairlawn, daughter of Charles and Jacqueline Harris, received the Michael Keith Dwyer Art Scholarship at Baldwin-Wallace College's 2008 Ovation ceremony. The 2006 graduate of Akron's Firestone High is majoring in studio.
• Cameron Scheetz, a graduating senior at Cuyahoga Falls High School, was named the recipient of a $2,000 Richard H. Gorsuch Scholarship, one of three awarded by American Municipal Power-Ohio. He is the son of Greg Scheetz and Andrea Swain. Scheetz plans to attend Ohio University and major in journalism.
• Summit Academy students Matthew Friend and Alex Orosz received black belts in the schools' Therapeutic Martial Arts program, the first students in the school's nine-year history to achieve the recognition.
• The Akron Symphony Chorus awarded the $1,000 John MacDonald Vocal Scholarship to Sarah Gardner, who is working on her master's degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music.
• Heather Stump, a sophomore at Mount Union College, was selected by Campus Compact to receive the 2008 Frank Newman Leadership Award. The award is designed to support and recognize students with financial need who have demonstrated civic leadership. During 2007, she volunteered more than 600 hours. She received $5,000 for school-related expenses or to support her civic work. The compact is composed of more than 1,100 college and university presidents who are committed to fulfilling the civic purposes of higher education.
• Daniel J. Walton, a senior at Malone College, is the recipient of the $4,500 Frederic D. and Dorothy C. Vechery Christian College Consortium Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year. He is a senior media communications major from Canal Fulton.
• Ronald Levant, dean of the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Akron, was elected president of the Ohio Council of Deans of Colleges of Arts and Sciences. The new organization for public universities in Ohio promotes information and resource sharing, and fosters innovation and collaboration.
• Anne Julian, a senior at Firestone High School in Akron, received a President's Award scholarship to attend the Columbus College of Art & Design. The merit scholarship was awarded as a result of an art portfolio competition held at the college. she is the daughter of Sally Julian of Akron.
