The United Way of Summit County Volunteer Center recruits and refers volunteers to area nonprofit organizations and other groups required to incorporate volunteer programs for accreditation.
For details about volunteer opportunities, contact the Volunteer Center, 90 N. Prospect St., Akron, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays at 330-762-7601, Ext. 5512, or http://www.uwsummit.org.
The following organizations need volunteers:
ACCESS Inc.: Volunteer drivers needed weekdays 2-8 hours a week to transport adult residents to housing-related appointments, to obtain clothing, etc. in Akron. Minimum age: 21.
Akron General Medical Center: Volunteers needed weekday mornings and afternoons to greet and escort guests at the Heart and Vascular Center. Minimum age: 18.
Akron Recreation Bureau: Volunteers needed July 24-27 to help with the Akron Arts Expo. Minimum age: 17, 15 with adult supervision.
Akron Summit Community Action: Volunteer Foster Grandparents needed weekday mornings and afternoons to work one-on-one with special-needs children. Minimum age: 60.
American Red Cross, Summit County Chapter: Volunteers wanted 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m. weekdays to transport individuals to medical appointments. Minimum age: 21.
Barberton Hospital, Summa Health System: Volunteers needed between 8 a.m.-8 p.m. daily to help in Gift Shop. Minimum age: 16.
Battered Women's Shelter: Volunteers wanted weekdays to provide support and information to survivors of domestic violence, stalking and sexual assault. Minimum age: 18.
Community Pregnancy Center (Barberton): Volunteers wanted 11 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays to help with office/clerical duties, sorting donations, etc. Minimum age: 18.
CYO and Community Services Inc.: Volunteers wanted weekdays to do data entry and help with large mailings. Minimum age: 16.
Glendale Cemetery: Volunteer groups of 4-6 individuals needed weekdays to assist with clearing dirt and overgrown grass covering headstones. Minimum age: 18, 12 with adult supervision.
Goodwill Industries of Akron: Volunteers needed weekdays and Saturdays to help with baling textiles and cardboard. Minimum age: 18.
Hattie Larlham Community Services: Volunteers needed to participate in bowling activities with residents. Minimum age: 18, 14 with adult supervision.
International Institute of Akron: Volunteer ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) tutors needed weekday mornings and afternoons to help students with language skills. Minimum age: 18.
Neighborhood Conservation Services of Barberton: Volunteers wanted to help paint homes of elderly/disabled residents for annual Paint Your Heart Out event on July 26. Minimum age: 13, younger with supervision.
New Destiny Treatment Center (Clinton): Volunteers wanted to help with daily meal program. Minimum age: 18, 10 with adult supervision.
Northcoast Behavioral Healthcare (Northfield): Volunteer needed 1:30-3 p.m. Tuesdays to tutor one-on-one and/or help with GED classes. Minimum age: 18.
Project: LEARN of Summit County: Volunteers needed to tutor adults three hours per week. Next training is July 12 and 19; workshop fee is $25. One-year commitment. Minimum age: 18.
Rape Crisis Center of Summit & Medina Counties: Volunteers wanted daily to provide hot-line support to victims of sexual assault. Minimum age: 18.
Regina Health Center (Richfield): Volunteers needed daily to help with serving food, office/clerical work, gift shop and companion visiting. Minimum age: 14.
Shaw Jewish Community Center of Akron: Volunteers needed the week of Aug. 10-15 for the JCC Maccabi Games, an international Olympic-style event for Jewish teens. Minimum age: 16.
