Six area artisans are listed in Early American Life magazine's 2008 Directory of Traditional American Crafts.
The annual directory recognizes superior craftsmanship by people who create art and artifacts by hand in the manner of artisans from the 17th, 18th and early 19th centuries. They are chosen by a panel of judges that includes museum curators, researchers, collectors and antiques dealers.
The local honorees are:
• Garrett Aston of The Chairmaker & Friends, 30 Center St., Seville, 216-905-2300 or http://www.chairmakerand-friends.com. Aston was recognized for his 18th-century Windsor chairs.
• Carl and Marcia Giordano of Carl Giordano — Tinsmith, Wadsworth, 330-336-7270 or http://www.cg-tinsmith.com. The Giordanos were recognized for their 18th- and 19th-century tinware.
• Barbara Franzreb, Calico Goose, Macedonia, 330-467-7402 or http://www.calicogoose.com. Franzreb was recognized for her country tin and decorative painting.
• Laura M. Enoch, Enoch's Thistledew Farm, Medina, 330-416-7887 or enochlaura@gmail.com. Enoch was recognized for her hand-spun wool yarn, carded roving and batting.
• Laurel Dabbs, Laurel Dabbs Decoys, Westfield Center, 330-887-1613 or http://www.laureldabbs.com. Dabbs was recognized for her 19th-century cedar gunning decoys.
The directory is in the August issue.
Soil test kits for sale
The Summit Soil and Water Conservation District is selling soil test kits, which are useful for identifying nutrient deficiencies in soil and helping homeowners apply the correct fertilizers or other amendments in the right amounts.
Soil tests help avoid excess application of fertilizer, which can make its way into surface water and cause problems such as killing fish and other aquatic animals, causing lakes to become choked with weeds and contributing to flooding.
The kits are $12 and are available at the district office, 2795 Front St., Suite D, Cuyahoga Falls. For information, call 330-929-2871 or visit http://www.summitswcd.org.
