• These Girl Scouts received the Gold Award from Girl Scouts of North East Ohio: Deanna Wolford of Aurora; Nicole Pupino of Fairlawn; Madeleine Coffmann, Christine Mascali, Sarah Feldman, Alison Palmeri, Victoria Popovich and Catherine Wagner of Hudson; Larissa Parson and Erica Stole of Lake Township; Heather Willmer of Mantua; Amanda Chema, Elizabeth Rapalee and Katherine Schuerger of Medina; Melissa Folan and Jessica Gunnoe of Streetsboro; and Katie Basmagy of Twinsburg. The Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout can receive.
• Akron Lt. Jerry Hughes received the Officer of the Year Award from the Optimist Club. He joined the department in 1989 and currently is commander of the training bureau and its staff of 10.
• Karen Kriss of Wadsworth received the Commissioners' Award from her employer, the Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission. The award recognizes her outstanding performance as a vocational rehabilitation counselor.
• Rick Nichols of Cuyahoga Falls was one of 15 people statewide honored as outstanding elder caregivers by the Ohio Department of Aging during its annual elder caregiver awards ceremony in May.
• Mary Regula and Audrey Lavin of Canton were among a dozen people statewide inducted into the Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame for their service and achievements. More than 300 people have received the award since its inception in 1977.
• Annie Dorsey, a receptionist at Westfield Belden Village, was named the Canton-Stark County Convention and Visitors' Bureau Outstanding Employee of the Year at the 2008 Best of Stark County Awards Luncheon.
• The Breakfast Optimist Club of Cuyhoga Falls presented its Respect for Law Award to Capt. Randy Rivers of the Cuyahoga Falls Police Department. He joined the department in 1980 and now is commander of the communication division.
• The Summit County chapter of the American Red Cross presented Becky Considine with its Clara Barton Award, the highest recognition given to a volunteer in the organization's service. She has volunteered at the Red Cross, Akron Children's Hospital, Hoban High School, Litchfield Middle School and elsewhere.
• Streetsboro Police Officer Andrew Suvada received the 2008 Crisis Intervention Team Officer of the Year Award. CIT is a specialized training program offered by the National Alliance on Mental Health of Ohio that educates law enforcement officers about mental illness and substance abuse.
• John Rozak of Medina earned the Boy Scout rank of Eagle Scout. He is a 2008 graduate of Cloverleaf High School and plans to attend the University of Akron this fall. He is the son of Ken and Colleen Rozak.
Military news
• Marine Pvt. Joseph J. Papp, son of Gloria Papp of Stow and John Papp of Lake Township, completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. He is a 2007 graduate of Stow-Munroe Falls High School.
• Marine Pvt. Brian Bartholet, son of Walter Bartholet and Kathleen Bartholet and stepson of Julie Bartholet, all of New Franklin, completed basic training at Marine Corps Recurit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. He is a 2005 graduate of Manchester High School.
• Marine Corps Master Sgt. John C. Dick, son of Kenneth Dick of Stow, completed Expeditionary Strike Group Integration Training while assigned to the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit. He is a 1984 graduate of Cuyahoga Falls High School.
• Army Second Lt. Timothy D. Dill, son of Doug and Annie Dill of Canal Fulton, was commissioned at Fort Lewis, Wash. He is a 2003 graduate of the Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy and a 2007 graduate of the University of Central Florida.
