Volunteers are sought to install a rain garden next Saturday at the Lakemore Municipal Building, 1400 Main St.
Rain gardens are designed to control storm water by collecting it just long enough to allow it to percolate into the soil, where it is cleaned naturally. The Lakemore rain garden will serve as a demonstration project to educate residents.
Participants in the installation will also hear a presentation by the Summit Soil & Water Conservation District on the benefits of rain gardens.
Work will start at 8 a.m. To volunteer, call David Jenkins, 330-733-6125.
Horticulture program
Applications are being accepted for the Portage County Master Gardener Program.
Master gardeners are volunteers trained in various aspects of horticulture.
Classes will meet from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays from Aug. 27 to mid-December at the Ohio State University Extension's Portage County office, 6970 State Route 88, Ravenna. Instructors are extension educators, state extension specialists, OSU professors, researchers and horticulture professionals.
To request an application, call the extension office, 330-296-6432.
Guide identifies trees
A new guide from the Arbor Day Foundation promises to make it easier to identify trees.
The new version of the foundation's What Tree Is That? includes full-color illustrations of trees' distinctive characteristics. The guide employs a step-by-step approach that explains what to look for, such as the shape of the leaves, the differences in the leaf stems and twig structures, and the details of buds and bark.
An online version of What Tree Is That? is at http://www.arborday.org. Printed copies may be ordered on the Web site for $5 each, or send your name, address and $5 for each guide to What Tree Is That?, Arbor Day Foundation, Nebraska City, NE 68410.
