Timberlake to host Espy Awards tonight

By Chuck Barney
Contra Costa Times

Don't miss:

The 16th Annual Espy Awards — Host Justin Timberlake is a self-described ''sports junkie,'' but you don't have to be one to get a kick out of this star-studded bash, which celebrates the year's best athletic achievements in highly entertaining style. Joining Timberlake on stage at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles will be a wide array of Hollywood heavyweights, including Ashanti, Kristen Bell, Zac Efron, Samuel L. Jackson and Kate Walsh. As usual, fan voting will determine the winners in categories that honor individuals, as well as teams. Also, Olympic track legends Tommie Smith and John Carlos will be presented with the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. 9 tonight, ESPN.

Other bets

Tonight: The wildly successful High School Musical franchise has included movies, a concert tour, a stage production and even an ice show. The next step, naturally, is a reality series. High School Musical: Get in the Picture follows teens as they participate and compete in a summer music program. Alas, Zac Efron won't be in the picture. 8 p.m., ABC.

Tonight: In Foyle's War: Broken Souls, a new installment of Masterpiece: Mystery, the detective chief superintendent investigates the murder of an unpopular doctor found stabbed to death in his office and also probes the slaying of an escaped German POW. 9 p.m., PBS.

Monday: Wanna Bet? is a reality series that has celebrities wagering on the outcomes of wild stunts performed by ordinary folk. Among the goofy antics: A contestant tries to do the hula-hoop with a 50-pound tire. Another attempts to solve the Rubik's Cube while blindfolded — under water. Money won by the celebs goes to charity. 9 p.m., ABC.

Monday: Heidi Fleiss: The Would-Be Madam of Crystal is an offbeat documentary that follows the former "Hollywood Madam" as she attempts to open a brothel in Crystal, Nev., staffed by men who would cater to a female clientele. 9 p.m., HBO.

Tuesday: For some reason, we love to see our fellow humans do pratfalls and face-plants. So it's no wonder that the reality series Wipeout is one of the biggest hits of the summer. Obstacles tonight include the Wrecking Ball Swing, Barrel Spin and Slippery Snakes. Once again: Do not try this at home. 8 p.m., ABC.

Tuesday: The rugged fishermen of Deadliest Catch race to capture their final quotas while struggling with ice and equipment issues. That is until an ominous message has the guys returning to port. 9 p.m., Discovery.

Wednesday: No longer charged with the care of little tykes, the Baby Borrowers now welcome other teens into their homes. Something tells us this won't be pretty. 9 p.m., NBC.

Thursday: The anthology series, Fear Itself, serves up another spooky tale in ''Community.'' It follows a young couple (Brandon Routh and Shiri Appleby) who believe they have just moved into an idyllic neighborhood. Oh, are they so wrong. 10 p.m., NBC.

Friday: Have you been keeping tabs on adorable little furballs of Meerkat Manor? Tonight's new episode brings tension to the Kalahari as Sophie and Simon are ambushed by Maybelline and the Aztecs. 8:30 p.m., Animal Planet.

Saturday: The 'tweens will scream during Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour. It's a documentary that follows the young superstar as she rocks out with the Jonas Brothers and packs arenas wherever she goes. 8 p.m., Disney Channel.
