Photo snag dries up shot for water-wise garden created by Falls company

A garden created by the Cuyahoga Falls landscaping company Beautiful Gardens By Buckeyes just missed a chance to be a calendar model.
A photo of the garden in Stow was chosen by the Association of Professional Landscape Designers and Monrovia Growers in a national competition for inclusion in Monrovia's 2009 calendar. The garden was honored for exemplifying the best use of water-wise plants.
Unfortunately, the resolution of the digital photo turned out to be too low, so the calendar opportunity had to be scrapped, said Anthony Viscariello, the association's communications manager.
The photo is fine for our use, so we're sharing it with our readers.
Beautiful Gardens By Buckeyes is owned by Marc and Elizabeth Gross, both horticulture graduates of Ohio State University.
Festival to honor couples
The Barberton Mum Fest is looking to honor some of the area's own.
The festival will feature the renewal of marriage vows by area couples who are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversaries in 2008, the same year that marks the 50th anniversary of the chrysanthemum's designation as Barberton's official flower. The event will be at 3 p.m. Sept. 20 under the mum arch.
Couples interested in participating should contact Lisa McLean at 330-848-6653 or Lmclean@cityofbarberton.com.
In addition, the festival will honor Barberton women who supported the war effort by working in factories during World War II. Honored will be women who lived in Barberton from 1941 to 1945 and worked in factories in Akron or Barberton, current Barberton residents who worked in factories elsewhere, and women who worked in Barberton factories during the war years.
The women will be honored at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Barberton Military Honor Roll in Lake Anna Park.
Qualifying women should call McLean or send e-mail toharnden@live.com to register.
The Mum Festival will be Sept. 20-21 at Lake Anna Park.
Deadline extended
The deadline has been extended to Aug. 31 for the Trash to Treasure contest sponsored by the PBS show Design Squad.
As we told you in April, the contest encourages young people from kindergarten through high school to turn recyclable items into innovative, functional things. The winner gets $10,000 from the Foundation.
