Wayne R. Hedrick of Akron was inducted as a fellow in the American College of Radiology. He is a medical physicist at Aultman Hospital in Canton, and a professor of medical radiation biophysics in radiology at the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and Pharmacy.

School news

Hannah Allchin of Uniontown received the Hesse Outstanding Freshman Award from the College of Engineering at Valparaiso University, where she's studying mechanical engineering.

• Four area college students received scholarships through the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency's Environmental Education Fund. Kendra DiPietro of North Canton, a civil engineering major at the University of Dayton; Johnathan Moor of Canton, a civil engineering major at the University of Cincinnati; Laura Seloover of Clinton, a chemical engineering major at the University of Akron; and Danielle Tucker of Alliance, an environmental biology major at Mount Union College, each received a $2,500 scholarship for the 2008-2009 school year. The scholarships are funded through fines paid by polluters.

• Wadsworth High graduate Jenna Elaine Trillet received a $500 scholarship from the Medina County auditor's office. She will major in forensic psychology at Tiffin University this fall. The scholarship money came from donations from the auditor's staff.

• These students at Riedinger Middle School in Akron took part in a yearlong leadership class sponsored by Leadership Akron: Della Mae Cook, Xavier Curry, Joshmere Dawson, Felicia Ferguson, James Fields, Chantal Foster, Geovanni Fowlkes, Talisah Gardner, Miranda Jones, Alexus Livingston, Dezmond Love, DeVonShun Merchant, Htaw Mon, Donavan Partee, Newton Praseuth, Jose Rodriguez, Leanna Sherman, Akeem Sutton, Saryah White, Nolia Ulmer, KeAuna Wilson and Kue Yang. The volunteer coordinator was Bob Paconovsky.

Nina Schreckengost, daughter of Mark Schreckengost of Alliance, received several scholarships to attend the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City. Nina is the granddaughter of Bonnie Ewing of Alliance and Paul Schreckengost of Indian Wells, Calif.

• These students received college-sponsored National Merit Scholarships: Jaclyn R. Friend of Akron, who plans to study English and literature at Denison University; Rachel A. Rutledge of Canton, accounting at Ohio State; Timothy D. Smith of Canton, undecided at Tulane University; Daniel M. Bowman of Cuyahoga Falls, finance at Miami University; Trevor A. Dasch of Medina, software engineering at the University of Dayton; Kelsey J. Weigel of Medina, nursing at Ohio State; Brenna N. Case of North Canton, education at Gordon College; Nicole E. Hess of North Canton, the ministry at Wheaton College; Megan A. Lilley of North Canton, business at Northwestern University; Andrew D. Spehar of North Canton, health care at Vanderbilt University; Raymond E. Moore of Northfield, chemical engineering at Case Western Reserve University; Anthony A. Papa of Sagamore Hills, finance at Ohio State; Elizabeth D. Hoffman of Stow, law at the University of Cincinnati; Max M. Williger of Stow, medicine at Ohio State; and Matthew L. Hagenbuch of Twinsburg, electrical engineering at the University of Dayton.

Military news

• Army Capt. Daniel J. Taphorn, son of James G. and Chong Hui Taphorn of Bellbrook, Ohio, completed the Sapper Leader Course at the U.S. Army Engineer School, Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, Mo. His wife, Heidi, is the daughter of Dennis and Karen Wessel of Hudson.

• Army 2nd Lt. Cody R. Grimm, son of Laurie A. Cogdeill of Cuyahoga Falls and Bruce H. Grimm of Kent, graduated from the Basic Officer Leader Course at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. He is a 2003 graduate of Woodridge High and a 2007 graduate of the University of Akron.

• Army Pvt. Daniel A. Ladines, son of Cindy Smith of Akron, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

• Army Pvt. Alex T. Christman, son of Amy and Brent Christman of Silver Lake, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

• Army National Guard Pfc. Renee N. Rostocil, daughter of Robert Rostocil of Hinckley, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. She is a 1998 graduate of Highland High and a 2001 graduate of Ashland University.

• Army Pvt. Kevin L. Lewis, grandson of Barbara Crooks of Akron, graduated from the Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.

• Army Pvt. Jean-Marie J. Borgonovo, son of Philippe Borgonovo of Akron, graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.

• U.S. Navy Ensign Kyle Thomas Jones, son of Gregory and Para Jones of Canton, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy. He is a 2004 graduate of Canton Central Catholic High School.

• Army Pfc. Garrett E. Sheaffer, son of Mary Feister of Ligonier, Pa., and stepson of Jesse Feister of Akron, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is a 2006 graduate of Ligonier High School.

• Army Spec. Jacob T. Frederick, son of Tom and Joan Frederick of Clinton, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. He is a 2003 graduate of Norton High School and a 2007 graduate of Kent State.

• Air Force Airman Amber D. Long, daughter of John and Laura Long of Barberton, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. She is a 2008 graduate of Barberton High School.

• Air Force Airman Jessica D. Kozlowski, daughter of Ray Kozlowski of Tallmadge, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. She is a 2005 graduate of Field High School.

• Air Force Airman 1st Class Gary A. Nicholas was chosen to be in the honor guard at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, S.C. He is the son of Karla Dye and grandson of Charles and Tommie Nicholas, all of Barberton. He is a 2006 graduate of Barberton High.

• Army Pvt. Edgar A. Arbogast, son of Ed Arbogast of Bolivar, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
