Community news

• Members of the Hattie Larlham Research Advisory Board are Ronald Savage, George Niemann, Phil Rumrill, Roberta DePompei, Al Condeluci, Dennis C. Russo, David L. Holmes, Michael Reed, Dr. Carolyn Greem, Margaret C. McBride, Susan Redline, Kathleen Sanniti, Dr. Richard I. Grossberg and Dr: Samuel J. Horwitz.

• Four area residents are among the 40 members of the newly formed Ohio Film Commission's Advisory Group: Paul Hilbert of Creative Technology in Akron; Keeven White of WhiteSpace Creative in Akron; Chad Kapper of StoneKap Productions in North Canton; and Traci Williams, an instructor in Kent State's Department of Pan-African Studies.

• Dr. Deborah S. Plate of Akron received the 2008 Family Physician of the Year Award from the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians. She is clinical associate director and clerkship site director for Akron General Medical Center's Family Medicine Center.

• Summit County Children Services honored the following area foster parents for their commitment to children: Cecil and Joyce Higginbotham of Atwater, Veteran Foster Family of the Year; William and Susan Smith of Uniontown, Rookie Foster Family of the Year; and Charles and Geraldine Figley of Norton, Iola Jones of Akron, Jerry and Betty Kearns of Akron and Michael and Doretha Williams of Akron, all Retiring Foster Parents.

• The American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation gave Dr. Ross R. Black and Linda Black of Akron the organization's 2008 Philanthropist of the Year Award. Black has practiced family medicine in Cuyahoga Falls for more than 19 years.

• These area teens were honored as the Medina County 4-H Outstanding High School Seniors: Jonathan Brietkrenz, son of Jerry and Diane Brietkrenz; Katelin Everhard, daughter of Ken and Sarah Everhard; Beth Joseph, daughter of Linda Hoffman Joseph; Caci-Lane Lewandowski, daughter of Lorinda Lewandowski; Heidi Santelmann, daughter of Ken and Margaret Santelmann; Adam Sniff, Jacob Sniff and Rachel Sniff, children of Tom and Alyce Sniff; Kelsey Stoll, daughter of Jack and Diane Stoll; Kimberly Tekus, daughter of John and Patricia Tekus; Jacob Tyree, son of Jim and Jill Tyree; Mallory Vereb, daughter of Joe and Liz Vereb; Jessie Witschey, daughter of Robert and Patricia Witschey; and Michael Woolsteen, son of Robert and Sheri Woolsteen.

• Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland announced these appointments to state boards and commissions: The 9-1-1 Council, Lynne C. Feller of Wooster; the Housing Trust Fund Advisory Committee, Grady Appleton of Akron; the Motor Vehicle Salvage Dealers Licensing Board, Gary Siciliano of Sagamore Hills; the State Fire Commission, Tamira A. Bridgeman of Cuyahoga Falls; the Ohio Peace Officers Training Commission, Robert Fiatal of Sagamore Hills; and the Commission on Hispanic/Latino Affairs, Lupe Williams of Wooster.

Linda Barclay, professor and program director of counseling and human development programs at Walsh University, is president-elect of the American Mental Health Councelors Association and will be president in 2009-2010.

Military news

• Marine Pvt. Jared Chapman, son of John and Laura Chapman of Norton, completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. He is a 2006 graduate of Norton High School.

• Navy Seaman Justyn K. Speck, son of Wendy and Kiowa Speck of Akron, completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 2007 graduate of Garfield High School.

• Air Force Airman Misty M. Kowell, daughter of Laura Kowell of Navarre, completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. She is a 2001 graduate of Washington High School, Massillon.

• Air Force Airman Reco A. Hankton, son of Michellae Hammond Johnson of Barberton, completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2007 graduate of Barberton High School.

• Air Force Reserve Airman Cody A. Radsick, son of Annette and Jeff Radsick of Massillon, completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2007 graduate of Perry High School.

• Air Force Reserve Airman Kayla N. Wirick, daughter of Christie and Chris Shelby of Ravenna, completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. She is a 2007 graduate of Rootstown High School.
