Saving money on a car doesn't need to be an ordeal.

Philip Reed of auto-research site Edmunds.com said the first step is to realize that car-buying has changed. ''If you look at the average consumer on the market right now, it's quite likely they haven't bought a car since 2002. And, boy, the world was a very different place in 2002,'' he said.

Web sites such as http://www.Edmunds.com and various car-sale sites have transformed the way the industry works. Most customers begin their shopping online, and dealers know it.

Now, dealers have less profit in the vehicle price, so they have come to rely more on other products, such as loans, add-ons and repair service.

''It's hard to choose a really bad vehicle these days, but it's not hard to choose a really bad deal,'' said Jack Nerad, editorial director for Kelley Blue Book and author of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Buying or Leasing a Car.
