Meet me at the market on Saturday and we'll get cooking with some foods fresh from the farm.
I'll be at the Beacon Farmers Market in Lock 3 Park from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. I'll be doing some cooking demonstrations and we'll have recipes to give away.
Stop by to say hello and check out all of the fresh fruits, veggies and other items for sale.
The market is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in downtown Akron. Singer Alex Bevan also will be performing.
Mark your calendars
More than 30 Cleveland area restaurants will gather for the 13th Annual Taste of Cleveland on Labor Day weekend, Aug. 29 to Sept. 1.
Restaurants, bistros, cafes and bakeries will be selling sample-size portions of their specialties at the festival, which also includes live entertainment.
Taste of Cleveland is at the Time Warner Cable Amphitheater at Tower City Center in downtown Cleveland.
The fest is open 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29; noon to 11 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 30 and 31; and noon to 8 p.m. on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 1.

Donate for a doughnut
Dunkin' Donuts restaurants in the Akron-Canton area are collecting new and gently used backpacks and other school supplies for the America's Second Harvest Food Bank BackPack program.
You can make a donation from now until Sept. 20 at area Dunkin' Donuts stores and they'll give you a free doughnut to say thanks.
The backpacks will be filled with child-friendly, nonperishable, vitamin-fortified food and given to low-income children before a weekend or a holiday. The program is designed to discreetly send necessary food home to children during times when other resources are not always available.
All backpacks collected will benefit the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank.
Make donations at the following Dunkin' Donut locations: 2739 Medina Road, Medina; 9168 State Route 14, Streetsboro; 1370 E. Main St., Ravenna; 1041 W. State St., Alliance; 4898 Portage St. N.W., North Canton; 2644 Fulton Drive, Canton; 5075 Darrow Road, Hudson; 1830 E. Waterloo Road, Akron; 750 E. Steels Corners Road, Stow; 310 Tallmadge Road, Cuyahoga Falls; and 1064 Graham Road, Cuyahoga Falls.

Benefit for market
The 10th annual Farm to Table benefit for the North Union Farmers Market and the Cleveland Botanical Garden will be Monday at the Geis Terrace of the garden, 11030 East Blvd., Cleveland.
The benefit celebrates the year of the honeybee, and features chefs from many of Northeast Ohio's finest restaurants preparing food with local ingredients.
It will focus on the importance of honeybees, whose populations are diminishing throughout Ohio and the country, and will feature honey tastings by Jorgensen's Apiary and the Ohio Honey Company.
The benefit begins at 5:30 p.m. with a symposium on ''Local & Green,'' moderated by author and chef Michael Ruhlman, and featuring Stanley Gardner, doctor of preventative medicine in Westlake; Jeff Heinen, owner of Heinen's Markets; Rebecca Reynolds, owner of Green Clean Inc.; Steve Schimoler, owner of Crop Bistro and Warren and Angela Seymour, owners of Longhedges Estates.
Chef stations are open from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Tickets are $85, $75 for members of the North Union Farmers Market or Botanical Garden, $45 of which is tax deductible. Tickets include an open wine bar and tours of the garden.
Paid reservations are required. Call 216-721-1600, Ext. 100, for tickets. The event will take place rain or shine and tickets are nonrefundable.
Parking is not included in the ticket price.
Taste some tasty items
About a dozen local restaurants will be offering samples of their foods on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. when BJ's Wholesale Club, 1677 Home Ave., hosts a Taste of the Town event.
Manager Joe Summers said the event is open to the public. Non-members can obtain a one-day pass to shop if they want to attend. There also will be music and children's activities, he said.
Cooking videos online
Can't afford cooking lessons? Head to your computer where the Certified Angus Beef brand, headquartered in Wooster, has added a new feature to its Web site — cooking videos.
Corporate chef Scott Popovic is featured in several demonstrations on simple ways to prepare beef. The videos show how to braise, saute, grill and carve, and feature home economist Sarah Donohoe.

Free treats at Table 45
Chef Zachary Bruell will be cooking up free appetizers at his restaurant's new happy hours, from 4 to 6 p.m. weekdays at the bar at Table 45.
The happy hours also feature a selection of half-priced drinks.
Table 45 is in the InterContinental Hotel, 9801 Carnegie Ave., Cleveland. The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to midnight Sunday through Thursday and until 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Valet parking is free. For reservations, contact call 216-707-4045.

The contest is open to children ages 6 to 12, who submit an original recipe using Jif Peanut Butter, which is owned by J.M. Smucker of Orrville.
Entries are being accepted through Nov. 14. Five finalists will win a trip to New York City for live judging.
The grand prize is a $25,000 scholarship fund to help pay for college. The four runners-up will each receive a $2,500 scholarship.
