Separate From the World is sixth in the Ohio Amish mystery series by Wooster author P.L. Gaus. Professor Michael Branden is the go-to guy for some Amish folks who want an educated ''English'' point of view, without being condescended to. When Enos Erb approaches him to discuss his suspicions that his brother was murdered, he is willing to talk to the sheriff, but they are interrupted by another tragedy: A student has fallen from the college bell tower.
The young woman had been Branden's student. Was it an accident, or did her boyfriend push her? Campus activists are trying to stir up discontent between the students and the police. As Branden investigates Benny Erb's death, he learns that the local Amish are dividing over the matter of cooperation with a scientific study of hereditary diseases and conditions in their community (dwarfism is common in the Erb family); in this, it is similar in theme to Columbus author Karen Harper's 2005 romance Dark Angel.

Literary event
The Lit has chosen the writers for this year's Writers & Their Friends event to be held Sept. 6 at the Ohio Theatre in Cleveland's PlayhouseSquare. After a reception at 7 p.m., the writers' works ''are woven into one dramatic (and often comic) script'' and performed by local celebrities.
Among the names are Strongsville author Cinda Williams Chima (Dragon Heir), Beacon Journal columnist David Giffels (All the Way Home), Akron investigative reporter James Renner (Amy: My Search for Her Killer) and University of Akron student Shurice Gross.
