School news

• The Summit County Council of Italian-American Societies awarded scholarships to the following Akron-area students: Amanda Ciraco, Jaclyn Mure and Lindsay Journic of Akron; Maria Conti, Stephanie Simcox and Angelica Powers of Stow; Alexandria Evans and Vincent Frascello of North Canton; Jenna Glover of Canal Fulton; Alysa L. Granata and Katelyn Paolucci of Cuyahoga Falls; Vincent Lofreso and Megan Zita of Norton; Jamie Pace of Tallmadge; Samuel Rella of Hudson; and Monica Rizzo, of Uniontown.

Bekah Frient of North Canton received a $6,000 Director's Scholarship to Ashland University. She is the daughter of Carol and Jack Frient. She graduated from Our Lady of the Elms High School in Akron this year.

• Several area students received scholarships at Mount Union College: Marc Chenowith of Akron, son of David and Irene Chenowith; Joseph Bowers of Akron, son of John and Joyce Bowers; James Adkins of Kent; and Jessica Schobert of Akron, daughter of Jeffery and Margaret Schobert.

Maggi J. Szasz, daughter of Frank and Margi Szasz of Massillon, received a College Scholarship and Service Book Award from St. Michael's College in Colchester, Vt. The award recognizes students in high schools across the country who demonstrate a commitment to volunteerism and leadership through community service.

Linda Barclay, professor and director of counseling and human development programs at Walsh University, is president-elect of the American Mental Health Counselors Association, the second-largest divisional affiliate of the American Counseling Association.

• The Kent State Alumni Association appointed these officers: Timothy D. Eippert of Concord, president; Nicholas Sucic of Hudson, president-elect; Thomas M. Welsh of Akron, vice president; Michael A. Cesa of Seven Hills, secretary; Stephen O. Rhinehalt of Rocky River, treasurer; and Gary Brahler of Bay Village, past president. John Garofolo of Sagamore Hills and Stuart Giller of Akron were appointed to three-year terms on the board of directors.

• Wadsworth resident Sean Kemmerer, son of Karen Gordon and Troy McCrork, received a $6,000 Director's Scholarship to Ashland University. He is a 2008 graduate of Wadsworth High School.

Amanda Jenkins, a junior majoring in education at the University of Akron, received a scholarship from the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Council of Akron.

Jaclyn Fuller, a senior public relations major from Canton, and Anthony Ocepek, a senior majoring in international economic and cultural affairs and French from Norton, were inducted into Pi Gamma Mu, the international social science honorary society at Valparaiso University.

Military news

• Air Force Airman Jerry J. Reynolds, son of Timothy Reynolds of Minerva, graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2007 graduate of Minerva High School.

• Air Force Airman Aaron D. Davis, son of Arlie Davis of Akron, graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2007 graduate of North High School in Akron.

• Air Force Airman 1st Class James P. Newbrough III, son of Brenda L. Newbrough of Norton, graduated from the computer network, switching and cryptographic systems course at Keelser Air Force Base in Biloxi, Miss.

• Air Force Reserve Airman Joseph J. Nunnari, son of Jayne Lobaza Hodges of Brunswick, graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2001 graduate of North Royalton High School.

• Air Force Airman Chad E. Lindemood, son of Jackie Thompson of North Canton, graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2006 graduate of Hoover High School in North Canton.

• Army National Guard Pvt. Jeremy C. Hendershot, son of Curt Hendershot of Uniontown, graduated from basic training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He graduated from Green High School in 2005.

• Army Reserve Pvt. Dejan Drobnjak, son of Pajo Drobnjak of Akron, graduated from basic training at Fort Jackson, Colulmbia, S.C. He is a 2007 graduate of North High School in Akron.

• Army Pvt. Adam D. Shilling, son of Robert and Suf Shilling of Dalton, graduated from basic training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is a 2005 graduate of Dalton High School.

• Air Force Airman Ian R. Patterson, son of Stephanie Patterson of Akron, graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2002 graduate of Waterloo High School in Atwater.
