The penguins wore tuxedos, but guests at the third annual Blue Ribbon Bash donned island-attire for the event Saturday evening at the Akron Zoo.
Bruce and Laura Hunsicker greeted 160 guests at the Caribbean-themed fundraiser for the One-in-Six Foundation, which he founded to promote community awareness and provide funds for prostate cancer research. The Hunsickers' sons, Steven and Grant, and their friends, Katy Watson and Courtney Miller, assisted with the event, along with volunteers from Woodridge High School's National Honor Society.
Kristen Koly and Mike Schetter introduced guests Pat and Pam O'Neill and Philip and Peggy Lloyd to an adorable Shih-poo puppy, while Sean Kelly introduced Aurora, a 5-year old green iguana. The Akron Zoo's jungle-like Komodo Kingdom was transformed into a lush tropical garden, which Neil Leesom decorated with orchids and birds of paradise. Rolando Pizana and his band provided reggae music for dancing.
Tom and Annette Bader and Al and Donna Barracato enjoyed the zoo's new exhibit, Jellies Rhythm in the Blue, while Cheri Cunningham, Carmen Roberto, Jane Taylor and Jack Shinnock looked over vacation trips, dinners and sports tickets in the live auction.
Linda Shand and Josh Grimm served Palm Bay Club margaritas. Moe's served a Caribbean-themed buffet of jumbo shrimp, crab cakes, and sesame chicken, with key lime pie, coconut cake and nut cookies for dessert.
Bruce Hunsicker expected the event would raise more than $70,000 for prostate cancer research at Johns Hopkins Medical Center.
