The United Way of Summit County Volunteer Center recruits and refers volunteers to area nonprofit organizations and other groups required to incorporate volunteer programs for accreditation.
For details about volunteer opportunities, contact the Volunteer Center, 90 N. Prospect St., Akron, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays at 330-762-7601, Ext. 5512, or http://www.uwsummit.org.
The following organizations need volunteers:
Akron City Hospital (Summa Health System): Volunteers needed from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays to provide information and directions to patients and visitors. Minimum age: 18.
Akron Civic Theatre: Volunteers needed during show times to take and count tickets, usher patrons, box office escorts and provide will-call assistance. Minimum age: 16.
Arc of Summit & Portage Counties: Volunteers wanted to help staff with coordinating special events and grant writing. Minimum age: 18.
CYO and Community Services: Volunteers needed two Saturdays a month to help with Recreational Respite program activities, such as swimming, arts and crafts, cooking and games. Minimum age: 13.
Grandparents Against Sex Predators (G.A.S.P.): Volunteers needed to research, write and submit grant proposals to local foundations, companies and organizations. Minimum age: 21.
JC's Place (Johnson United Methodist Church): Volunteers needed to help hang, sort, display clothing, toys and household items for those in need. Minimum age: 15, 10 with adult supervision.
Junior Achievement of Akron Area: Volunteers needed to help with special events during the year. Minimum age: 18.
Laurel Lake Retirement Community: Volunteers wanted weekday mornings and afternoons to help residents use exercise equipment. Minimum age: 18.
Library Shop on Main: Volunteers wanted on a flexible basis to help with sales, restocking/shelving and customer service. Minimum age: 18.
National MS Society: Volunteers wanted from 9:30 a.m. to noon Tuesdays to help with craft classes. Minimum age: 18.
New Destiny Treatment Center (Clinton): Volunteers wanted from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays to help with thrift store. Minimum age: 15, 12 with supervision.
Northcoast Behavioral Healthcare (Northfield): Volunteers needed from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Tuesdays to tutor one-on-one and/or help with GED classes. Minimum age: 18.
On a Mission to Manhood: Volunteers needed to mentor males ages 16-22 in a classroom setting Tuesdays through Thursdays mornings/early afternoons. Minimum age: 18.
Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP): Volunteers needed to phone and check on individuals who live alone and need daily contact. Minimum age: 55.
Road Runner Akron Marathon: Volunteers needed 4-6 hours on Race Day Saturday, Sept. 27, to help with needs throughout the marathon course. Minimum age: 14, 12 with adult supervision.
Rockynol Retirement Community: Volunteers needed from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. daily to greet residents and pour coffee during breakfast. Minimum age: 16.
Salvation Army of Summit County: Volunteers needed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays to help with agency maintenance and repairs. Minimum age: 18.
Summit County Historical Society: Volunteer tour guides wanted from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays-Saturdays to guide guests through the museum. Minimum age: 16.
Weathervane Community Playhouse: Volunteer ushers needed weekday evenings and weekends to greet and direct audience members to their seats. Minimum age: 16.
Written Communication Radio Service (WCRS): Volunteers needed daily to read printed materials on radio broadcast to visually impaired/physically disabled individuals. Minimum age: 18.
