Sports discs hang around

Surprise your buddy with one for locker or make wall hanging for bedroom at home

By Kathy Antoniotti
Beacon Journal staff writer

Fall sports are already under way, from peewee football games to Saturday soccer games. It's a good time to remember that although everyone can't be the team's captain, everyone can learn to work together to be good team players.

The 2004 United States Olympic men's basketball team learned that lesson the hard way in Athens, Greece. American teams have long been considered the hands-down favorite since the original Dream Team took its game to Barcelona in 1992. But in Athens, the Americans struggled to win the bronze medal. It was obvious the excellent NBA players who had rock-star status could not perform as a unit as well as they could perform individually.

The Americans reclaimed the dream in Beijing last month, led in large part by Akron's own basketball great LeBron James. To win the gold medal, they had to work hard to beat a superb team from Spain and reclaim Dream Team status.

Whether your game is basketball, football, soccer, baseball or all of them, it pays to remember the team is always more important than an individual player. Learn that lesson and you will not only be a winner on the field, you'll also be a winner in life.

Decorate your room or surprise a player's game-day locker with Styrofoam-brand plastic foam discs decorated to represent the balls used in your favorite sports. Check out all the sports-related scrapbook papers and stickers at your local craft store to make the balls. You can make a wall hanging with one disc, or build a grid of discs to represent all your favorite sports by attaching them with toothpicks and glue. Or, ''bounce'' the balls across your bedroom wall at different heights.

I used a football theme for my craft and used Ohio State stickers to please every Buckeye fan.

Supplies you will need:

• 1 12-by-1-inch Styrofoam-brand foam disc for each sport.

• 1 12-inch square of scrapbook paper to represent each ball you will be making.

• Various stickers to represent the sport, stick-on letters and numbers to identify the player, or team logo stickers.

• White craft glue.

• Scissors.

• A pencil.

• Ribbon.

Turn the paper face down and trace the disc. Cut out.

Turn the paper over and glue it to the surface of the disc. Use glue sparingly to avoid ripples.

Arrange the stickers on the paper before you attach them. Secure the decorations after you are happy with your design.

Glue a piece of ribbon to the back of the disc to form a hanger.

If making a grid of the discs, connect them with toothpicks and add a drop of glue to tightly secure.

Attach the hanger to the two outside discs.
