Cancer Center, ball shine

Summa fundraiser ushers in new facility for oncology services

By Betty O'Neill-Roderick
Special to the Beacon Journal

The Jean B. and Milton N. Cooper Cancer Center at Summa Health System was dedicated as a prelude to the eighth annual Sapphire Ball Saturday evening. Tom Strauss, president and chief executive, said the cancer center, which will open in October, will bring all outpatient oncology services into one building, creating a center for healing, comfort and hope for patients.

At the dedication, Dr. Milton Cooper spoke lovingly of his late wife, Jean, and her 18-year battle with cancer.

Tom Knoll, chairman of the Summa Health System Board of Directors, thanked the community for its support.

Heather Tharpe, Susan Savage, Scott and Carrie Berry and Sue Newbrough were excited to be working in radiation therapy and research at the new center.

Guests were serenaded by the Firestone Choir as they followed a luminaria walk to the ball, which took place in two huge white tents decorated with giant stars.

At the reception, Ann Amer Brennan, chairwoman of the Summa Hospitals Foundation Board of Directors, enjoyed conversation with Steve Schmidt and Rick Krochka, while Tom and Mary Ann Jackson joined Philip and Patty Kaufmann, their son, Christopher, and Ann Kaufmann, Philip's sister.

Martin Jakubow and Dr. Desiree Doncals introduced their daughters, Alexandra, 10, and Colette, 6. Michael Dalton conversed with Tia Stathopoulos-Butterworth and Jason Butterworth. Colleen and Frank Gazillo joined Marlene and Patrick Read, while Francia Albrecht and Sybby Martin stepped outside to enjoy the Serenity Garden.

Sammy's staff served a gourmet dinner of beef tenderloin and crab cakes to 675 guests. Chairwoman Donna Loomis enjoyed the event with her husband, Al, and June and Ed Carter, Amy and Jack DeLeo, Therese Peter, Charlotte Hamor, Chip and Laura Preston, Marty Wernig and Maria Waller.

Thomas and Lynda Bower had the winning bid for a Grand Cayman vacation and Brennan had the winning bid for a sapphire pendant designed by Scott Cevasco.

The event was expected to raise more than $350,000 for the Cancer Center.
