The National Football League teamed up with the Pro Football Hall of Fame to tackle hunger with a benefit for the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank on Tuesday. Rick Haines and Judi Shapiro co-chaired the event, where more than 400 people met enshrinees and sampled food from area restaurants.
Dan Flowers, president and CEO of the food bank, said it was great to hold the benefit at the Hall of Fame. ''We have a large presence in Stark County, and proceeds from this event will help to keep food on the tables of those in need,'' he said.
Mark Mitchell said the food bank has experienced unprecedented demand this year and distributed 12 million pounds of food in 2007, reaching 163,000 people.
Looking over the sports-themed silent auction were: Laura and David Grabowsky and Linda and Bill Alford.
At the tasting tent, Ben Fisher and Denise Hicks recommended the tomato bisque from Peter Shear's; Clayton Cundiff served his signature lobster crepes from the Harbor Inn; Steve Andreos offered scallops with risotto from Georgio's Grille; Angus McIntosh served Iris restaurant's ''pigskins;'' Scot Jones prepared vegan desserts from VegiTerranean; Nancy Deckerd and Renee Weaver offered Davis chocolates; and Sue Natoli served cookies from Main Street Gourmet.
After all the votes were counted, Brandt Evans of Blue Canyon Kitchen and Tavern was chosen favorite chef. He will participate in the national Taste of the NFL event prior to the Super Bowl, delighting his his proud parents, Barbara and Bernie Evans.
