• Dr. Michael Reed, director of the Division of Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology at Akron Children's Hospital, was elected to a two-year term as president of the American College of Clinical Pharmacology, a professional society for distributing information to improve drug use and the results for patients.
School news
• Abby Millsaps, a junior at Mount Union College, received a $1,000 scholarship from the Greater Cleveland chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. The award is open to students majoring in public relations, communications or a related field.
• Three Stark State College students received $1,000 in scholarships from the American Health Information Management Association's Foundation of Research and Education. Sophomores Denise Blogna of Canton, Bruna Weber of Wadsworth and Denise Sturgeon of Canal Fulton are pursuing associate degrees in health information management. One-hundred sixty-five students across the country competed for 90 association awards that were distributed this fall.
• Denison University awarded scholarships to Rachel Stevenson, a graduate of Copley High; Audrey French, a graduate of Revere High; Samantha Hyde, a graduate of Firestone High; Matthew McErlean, a graduate of Hudson High; Evan Nicholson, a graduate of Hoover High; Tyler Nicholson, a graduate of Hoover High; and Megan Ramsay, a graduate of Hudson High.
Also, Andrew Hessler, a graduate of Wooster High; Alex McCracken, a graduate of GlenOak High; Anelia Mutafova, a graduate of Jackson High; Hannah Price, a graduate of Hudson High; Haley Treier, a graduate of Firestone High; Brittany Brannon, a graduate of Waterloo High; and Jaclyn Friend, a graduate of Revere High.
• Nathan Hollingsworth, son of Jim and Vickie Hollingsworth of Alliance, and Hallie Wolff, daughter of Theodore and Dona Wolff of Spencer, are members of Kappa Kappa Psi, an honor society for the instrumental music program at Ashland University.
• Malone University welcomed five new members to its 30-member board of trustees: Dr. Garry Anderson of Tulsa, Okla; Dr. Stanley R. Anderson of North Canton; Mark B. Benedict of Lovettsville, Va.; Michael G. May of San Marino, Calif.; and William H. Thorla of Sacramento, Calif.
• University of Akron engineering students Nicole Averell and Haley Carman received $1,500 scholarships from the Akron Council of Engineering and Scientific Societies, a consortium of 11 organizations in the Akron area. Kent State biochemistry student Kristy Waite and UA engineering student Michael Clements received $1,000 scholarships. The organization gave $500 teacher project grants to Steven Wood of Hoover High; James Sicker of Central Catholic High; Andrew Brown of Crestwood High; Patricia Smoot Wicks of Buchtel High; Cathy Corr and Terri Duesing of Crestwood High; John M. Guidubaldi of East High; and Denise Johnson of Lehman Middle School.
Recognized as outstanding math and science students were Sierra Avent and Mathu Davis of Buchtel High; Laurel Homa and Dexter Collins of East High; Melissa Marmaduke and Cory Gravesmill of Ellet High; Katherine Alkire and Mike Simonson of Firestone High; Lyndsay Mitchen and David Graybeal of Garfield High; Shelby Torre and Tommy Myers of Kenmore High; Kristen Oles and Josh Kane of North High; Kelcie Cuckler and Tyler Dubina of Barberton High; Kristen Mattei and Dan Dressler of Copley High; Morgan Hayes and Jimmy Harrison of Coventry High; Kara Brock and Justin Marimon of Cuyahoga Falls High; and Sara Schnabel and Dominic Holman of Green High.

Also, the Akron section of the American Chemical Society presented $500 awards to Anastasia Smith of Mount Union College; Raymond Gipson of Kent State University; Mary Jo Kalasky of Walsh University; James Ross of Hiram College; Kyle Henry of Malone University; and Joseph Harp of the University of Akron. Nick Triantafillopoulos, director of the Akron Technical Center for Omnova Solutions, received the Distinguished Award of Council.
Military news
• Army Reserve Pvt. Christopher L. Boone graduated from basic training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. He is a 2004 graduate of East High School in Akron.
• Navy Seaman Recruit Ryan C. Brown, son of Diane and Stephen Brown of Stow, completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 2008 graduate of Stow-Munroe Falls High School.
• Navy Seaman Recruit Christopher H. Lipnick, son of Jim Brenneman of Sagamore Hills, completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 2008 graduate of Nordonia High School.
• Air Force Airman Joshua M. Johnson, son of Tony and Jayne Johnson of North Canton, graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2006 graduate of Hoover High School in North Canton.
