Christmas trees were the highlight of the We Gallery's first charity auction held at Musica Saturday night. Gallery owners Karyn and Erin Ludlam invited artists whose works are shown at the gallery to decorate the live dwarf Juniper fir trees that were featured in the auction. Their mother, also named Karyn, greeted guests while dad, Tom Ludlam, handled bartending duties.
''This event is our Christmas gift to the community,'' Karyn Ludlam said, ''to thank everyone for the support we have received since opening the gallery last June.''
Admission to the event was a donation of canned goods for the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank. Proceeds from the live auction were donated to Akron Children's Hospital. Ten percent of gallery sales were donated to the Akron Public Schools' After School Art Program.
Wendi Moses enlisted the aid of her daughters, Paisley and India, to serve hors d'oeuvres. Seven-year-old Kyle Knapp enjoyed the chocolate fountain as he shopped for a Christmas gift for his mother, accompanied by his dad, Gary Knapp. Eight-month-old Bella Fleck enjoyed all the bright colors with her mother, Bianca Fleck, her grandmother, Valerie Citino, and godmother, Carol Palladino.
Del Rey Loven discussed his paintings of ocean life with Terry Klausman. Daniel Malarcik and Heather Smith were drawn to a tapestry by Karen Pierson. Angela Drews liked the decorative purses by Ecoist of Miami.
Textile artist Troy Myers invited Ashley Linbach to model his clothing designs as he enjoyed the event along with Ed Gaffney, Ian Hynde, Brett Sawyer, Nate Kaufman, Eileen Matias, Missy Higgins, Dominic Ragozine, and Tommie and Kimberly Ford. Leyla Soleil entertained with belly dancing as guests shopped for Christmas gifts.
David Johnson handled the live auction while his wife, Cynthia, handled the ''Vanna White'' chore of showing the auction items, which included a guitar autographed by Chrissie Hynde.
The unique Christmas trees included a stunning stained-glass vase and ornaments by Jill Troppe, Swarovski Crystal Jewelry by Capozzi & Lang, Rubber City Clothing, a hand-painted coffee table designed by Miller South students and their teacher Julie Hogarth, and a Photos of Akron coffee table designed by Firestone High School student India Moses.
Kyle Knapp was delighted to have the winning bid for the tree from We Gallery. Other winning bidders included Joe Scaccio, Jonathan Smetak, Fil Trocchio, Ernie Koraly and Terry Wain.
